I love this car, drive around town in this one and you will make lots of friends. Everyone loves a VW Beetle! 1972 was the best year for the Super Beetle model. This car has been in my life since 1983. I am the second owner, it was originally owned by a man from Georgia. I was 17 years old when my dad pulled into our driveway in Studio City and honked the horn. I ran outside and saw an orange VW bug with a bright pink ribbon on the roof.
I eventually painted it cherry red. I drove it to San Diego for 2 years of college and then it made many trips up and down Interstate 5 after I transferred to Cal Berkeley. In 1989 I graduated from college and the bug was back in Studio City. In 1993, I gave it up for a VW GTI. My younger sister inherited the bug and drove it between home in Studio City and work in Sherman Oaks. One night, she ran into a chain closing off a parking lot. The windshield and top of hood was damaged. This was the only accident that the car received. Unfortunately, due to the age of the car, it was considered "Salvage" so the pink slip reflects that. My father decided to fix the car and brought it back to excellent condition. He painted it one of the original '72 beetle colors: Kansas Beige, had the engine rebuilt and replaced the seat covers with new black vinyl. And put in new black carpet. The car was then garaged and driven on the occasional weekend. When my dad passed away in 2013, I once again became owner of my first car. It needed mechanical work and I spent a pretty penny in 2015 getting the car repaired to be a reliable day-to-day vehicle in L.A. I have drove it as an everyday vehicle for about 1 year and then for the past 2 on occasion. All work was completed in Van Nuys at DH Automotive, I have invoices reflecting work completed and am happy to pass on the mechanic's contact information. I am ready to sell the car because my daughter is just shy of 16 and am hoping to get her a car. I don't want to own too many vehicles and although the bug is parked off the street with a waterproof car cover, I simply don't have room for it anymore.
The work completed was:
- Front disc brake conversion
- new brake shoes and drums
- new rear wheel cylinders
- Major tune up
- new distributor with vacuum advance electronic ignition
- new fuel pump and shaft
- rebuild of original carburetor
- new clutch cable
- 4 new white wall tires
- new tail light lenses
- new turn signal lenses
- new head light chrome rings
- new hub caps
- converted head lights to halogen
- new hood latch spring lever
The car drives excellent. I have had no problems since the mechanical overall was done in 2015.
From a cosmetic standpoint. a few areas need some paint touchup where it has chipped, but 99% of the paint is in great condition. There is a dent on the rear driver's side fender (see photo), the sunroof needs a new seal, the side door panels need to be better adhered, the dashboard needs slight repair under the glove compartment door, passenger side seat needs to be adjusted to be able to tilt forward.
