Super rare 1991 VW Jetta EcoDiesel. 1.6l (non-LDA) turbodiesel.
Description
If you're familiar with the rare EcoDiesel line, you already know what you're looking at and that you probably won't see another one anytime soon. 1991 Volkswagen MKII Jetta EcoDiesel. From the best source I could find on the rarity of this car, only 750 EcoDiesels were produced in '91 exclusively for the U.S. market.
The absolute best part of owning this diesel is that the DEQ test in just a "visible smoke check." You literally drive into the DEQ test bay, they stare at your exhaust for a minute, then you get your tag renewal. The first DEQ employee I saw for this car told me that he has only every failed one diesel for excessive smoke in over 30 years of working for DEQ.
1.6l turbocharged diesel engine with no LDA on the injection pump (that's the Eco part).
5spd transmission
241k original miles
Manual windows, sunroof, and locks all work great.
ENGINE: Very very strong running engine that has never let me down in any way. Seriously, this car is unstoppable after the initial work I put into it (listed below). Starts in any weather, never overheats, and has plenty of power at highway speeds. Power steering pump was deleted by the previous owner to save horsepower. I bought (and will include with sale) all the components to reinstall power steering but this car handles so easy I decided it didn't need it. The a/c works but needs a charge. I installed a control switch in the dash to turn the compressor on/off so that all the fan and vent settings can be used with or without a/c.
No leaks, but uses a little oil at a very slow rate, which is normal for a diesel. Uses some coolant at a very slow rate as well. I think this because I mostly run water in it instead of engine coolant so it just evaporates slowly. It doesn't burn any coolant and the cylinder head and gasket only have about 20k miles on them.
TRANSMISSION: Great condition with the exception that it occationally grinds when shifting into second gear.
EXTERIOR: You can see the paint is pretty worn. But the only damage to the body is a couple dings in the bumper plastics, and a very small corner dent next to the passenger side headlamp. I will include a replacement fender panel to repair this. It's just so small that it didn't bother me to leave it there. Comes with a spare front core support, just because they are hard to find if you ever need a new one. Also comes with an extra full set of rims, two of which have good tires on them.
INTERIOR: Exceptionally clean interior. Cloth seats and carpet have no rips or tears. The dash is very good. I have added the gauge set atop the dash that has a boost gauge, exhaust gas temp gauge, and tachometer. Only the boost gauge is wired up for now. It's an easy project to get the other two gauges hooked up. Has a bluetooth stereo with four Alpine speakers and is wired for a subwoofer (I'm keeping the boxed sub shown in the photos). Just throw your amp and sub in the trunk, plug and play.
-The done stuff-
Performed in early 2012 at about 224k miles:
Cylinder head rebuilt.
Replaced: clutch kit, water pump, timing chain and new cover (fuel injection pump timing set to specs by Halsey Automotive), oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, tires, brakes, front and rear struts, front end control arms with new bushings, tie rod ends, installed dashtop gauge set.
New battery in July 2017.
-The not done stuff-
Driver's side door trim not attached. Replace passenger side front fender (included) due to small dent next to headlamp. It needs a new tensioner pulley on the alternator belt (it occationally throws an alternator belt due to the worn pulley, but this engine is fully mechanical so it just keeps driving even without an alternator belt). A/C needs to be charged.
I bought this car when I had a long work commute and put a lot of work into it to make it a reliable daily driver, which it was. But I don't have a long commute anymore and much of my driving consists of hauling my family of five around town and not solo commuting to work. Therefore, I don't drive it very much anymore. So it needs to go to a new owner who will care for and fully appreciate it. I love it. I hope you will too.
