Description

We are forced to sell our 1981 5-speed Diesel Volkswagen Rabbit Caddy as we have moved out
to Rockaway Beach, New York and can't imagine subjecting a rust-free car like this to the snow
and salt, and the ocean air.
This Rabbit has a complete ground up restoration with a new 1.9L Diesel engine and a clean
interior with newly upholstered leather seats. This car was kept as original as possible, with
original working tape deck/radio and A/C. The wing windows on the passenger and driver-side
doors are sealed shut at the moment but we have the original hardware and they can be
opened back up easily.
We bought this car from a guy who rebuilds these Rabbit Pickups as a hobby. One of the things
he likes to do is color code each component of the car. You will notice when looking at the
engine and underneath the car that it is very clean and colorful for that reason. The car itself is
painted Sonnengelb (Sunbrite) Yellow, one of the original colors these cars were released in,
and has a light tan interior.
The engine runs great. Just hums along the road. The car is equipped with a spare tire
underneath, a camper shell, a trailer hitch, and a car jack. We also have a couple original books
on these front wheel drive models to help you learn about how these guys work.
The new engine has about 4500 miles on it.
These are really special cars, meant for someone who knows and loves them. After searching
for one of these for a few years, we found this one. It is in the best shape we had seen
throughout our search. We bought it a year ago, not knowing that we would be moving across
the country. We moved to New York in the spring and it has been living in my mother's garage
in California since. They start it up and drive it around the neighborhood frequently to keep it
warm. We would keep it if we could, but we won't be around to enjoy it. Now we need to buy
a more disposable car to drive around in the New York winter.
We have taken this car to a shop in Berkeley that specializes in these older Volkswagens. The
car has been fully inspected and brought up to speed. We would be happy to show you our
records of the car. Registration is current as of November. Title is clean.
A comprehensive list of the new and rebuilt parts includes:
New shocks and suspension
Bosch battery
Bosch of USA starter
Other work includes:
Fresh valve cover gasket, updated to the rubber style.
All new exhaust hangars, and one exhaust pipe replaced.
Injector overflow hoses replaced with viton hoses.
Injection pump resealed.
A coolant hose replaced that got diesel on it when the pump leaked.
Alternator belt replaced with Continental.
Wiring to the alternator and radiator fan repaired.
We had an original belt cover modified to fit the new 1.9L engine so the upper belt is now
protected with an original VW cover.
