Up for sale is a 1971 VW Campmobile Westfalia. This bus has been completely gone through and ready for many future camping trips! It is mechanically sound and very reliable as we have taken this bus on small road trips, driving around town every weekend as well as taking it on a 4+ hour trip and never had any issues. It doesn’t go fast.. but I manage to get 24mpg on long drives! We have replaced and upgraded so much on this bus that I’ll just list everything that has been done to it.
Mechanical
• Engine was pulled and gone through with New Rear Seal, complete gasket kit, heads cleaned and re-torqued to spec, Oil pump, Oil cooler, Push rod tubes, New Alternator Conversion, Carburetor, Starter, Exhaust Header and EMPI muffler, Billet valve covers, Electric fuel pump installed with New filters and hoses, New Electronic SVDA Distributor and Blue coil, Spark Plugs, wires, Alternator Belt, Battery Cables, New Battery
• Transmission was drained and replaced with fresh gear oil, New Clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing installed, some of the shifter bushings have been replaced, coupler replaced.
• Brakes have been completely replaced with new parts. First off, this is the first year for factory disc brakes on a VW bus and this bus stops great! I replaced the Rotors, calipers, pads, inner and outer front wheel bearings on both sides, new brake hoses, brake reservoir, rear shoes, wheel cylinders, rear brake hoses, brake hardware kits.
• Suspension was completely gone through as well. I replaced all the ball joints upper and lower, Tie rod ends, 4 shocks, sway bar bushings, drag link and steering damper.
• We put 4 new tires on and they probably have now around 1000 miles on them. Still plenty of tread and this bus rides great. Surprisingly smooth on the road!
• The fuel tank has been cleaned and is in nice shape, new filters, hoses, electric fuel pump, new fuel sending unit, new wires to the gauge and I replaced the fuel gauge. Unfortunately the gauge has been working great up until 2 weeks ago, it seems like it isn't reading correctly. I haven't had a chance to trace the problem but it might be something simple.
Exterior
• The bus has been repainted to the original green but it isn’t show car quality. The paint isn’t perfect and it does have some dings, chips and a couple rust spots here and there. Some repairs were done to the battery area, front floors and foot step areas. Nothing major structurally is bad though. Sliding door hinge has been completely rebuilt with new bushings and the door opens and closes great! All new headlights, marker light lenses installed. The rear tail lights and back up lights work great. As you can see in the pictures it still looks pretty good and still turns heads!
• New weatherstripping has been replaced pretty much on all of this bus with the exception of a few. New windshield seal, sliding door seal, both front door seals, rear hatch seal, engine lid seal, both side rear glass seals, rear window seal, left side louvered window seal, pop top seals have all been replaced.
• Pop top Canvas is new as well as restoring the pop top. It has been repainted and all new seals installed. It opens and closes as it should.
Interior
• Both front seats were recovered by the previous owner and they had them stitch a VW logo into the seat. Brand new front retractable seat belts which are nice to have. Both front door panels, sliding door, rear hatch interior side wall and headliner have been replaced with stained custom wood panels. The front rubber mat is the original and in pretty good shape. The center floor is custom stained wood and cut to fit the entire floor.
• The dash has been completely taken apart, sanded and painted. I replaced the headlight switch, emergency hazard switch, wiper switch works fine as well as the turn signal switch. The radio has been replaced with a after market Sony Xplode and two door speakers and new antenna as well. The wipers have been gone through and do work.. but they are very slow for some reason. I really think the motor is failing but they do work. The speedometer works great and very accurate, oil, generator lights work fine. I replaced all the bulbs in the gauge cluster as I went through it but I can’t seem to get the gauge lights to work while the headlights are on. Not a big deal but it’s something that doesn’t work. Horn does not work. I replaced the dome light and it works great. New VDO Oil temp gauge.
• The furniture has been completely repainted to a tan and a custom side cabinet was built for storage. The Z bed works great and folds out nicely. The sink however is just for show. It isn’t currently hooked up but wouldn’t take much to hook that back up and get it functional again. The refrigerator has been removed long before I owned it and we just use that area for storage. The Z bed, rear pad, and seat area have been replaced with a nice fabric to match the green, tan, black theme of the bus. The table has been rebuilt with a new stained piece of wood. New custom curtains installed. We do have the cot that goesupstairs but it's the original and needs recovering. It comes with the purchase of the bus.
This bus comes with a blazecut fire system which is installed above the engine just in case there might be a fire. The kit is around $200 alone and well worth the piece of mind. I also carry a fire extinguisher behind the driver seat as well. Has a clean clear Mississippi title. I tried to be as honest and clear about the description of this bus, but if you have any questions please message me.
