1962 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible
If you like to have fun in the sun, this is the car for you! This 1962 VW Beetle convertible is a real head turner and it’s ready for some top down driving. It has been restored with a few custom touches to make it a more reliable and safe vehicle but still has all the character of a classic convertible Volkswagen.
The body is stock apart from shaved front turn signals and earlier model taillights and has been painted in pearl yellow and white. The pictures don’t do justice to how striking the paint looks when it’s out in the sunlight. I’ve seen no evidence of rust in the body or chassis, which has been undercoated in black.
The interior has been refinished in black and grey tweed with grey carpet as well. It has a grant GT wood steering wheel and an EMPI short throw t handle shifter. I recently installed a Retrosound stereo which has the appearance of an original radio but is actually a modern AM/FM receiver with auxiliary inputs and Bluetooth. The wiring harness has been replaced with a new one from Wiring Works and the speedometer has been rebuilt. Last fall, I had a new Haartz Stayfast canvas top installed as well as a new headliner, padding kit, wooden bows and new rubber seals. I have a matching top boot as well. We also replaced all of the rubber seals for the doors and windows at the same time.
The bug has been fitted with an adjustable front beam, 2.5 inch lowered spindles, CB performance front disc brakes and stainless steel brake hoses. The transmission has been upgraded to a rebuilt 1967 model 12 volt transmission but the stock “short” axles were retained. The rear wheel cylinders and brake shoes were also recently replaced. It rolls on reproduction “BRM” style wheels with 135/15 front tires and 205/65 tires out back.
The engine was getting tired so I had it rebuilt last fall. I’ve only been about 200 miles on it due to winter weather. It has been bored out to 1776cc and has a counterweighted crankshaft, lightened flywheel, heavy duty valve springs and high performance valve train components. It has a Weber two barrel carburetor, Bosch 009 distributor with an electronic ignition, a Bosch internally regulated alternator and a ceramic coated header exhaust with a single muffler. The engine also has some chrome accents but retains a stock doghouse fan shroud and heater boxes. It’s not a race car but it makes plenty of reliable power and the heat works pretty well for a bug.
I feel that I need to stress that this is not a show car. Overall, it’s a very nice, very presentable car that will hold its own and get lots of attention at any cruise or show you take it to but it is far from perfect. The paint is several years old and as such, it has some rock chips and other imperfections. The front apron is a little beat up underneath and there is some pitting on the chrome of the window frame and rear view mirror. I just want to make sure people know what they are getting into. It was already in very good condition when I bought it and I have put a ton of work into it with the goal of making it a good looking, reliable car. It runs drives and stops well and has enough power to keep up with traffic. It has been a very dependable car and I wouldn’t be afraid to jump in it and drive across the country. I hate to sell it but I have a couple new projects that I want to focus on. I have more pictures as well. The car has a clear Colorado title in my name. I am located in Arvada, CO. I am happy to sell to overseas buyer. I do not offer shipping but I am happy to coordinate pickup with your shipper. Please feel free to ask any questions. Thanks!
