This is a Westfalia “tin-top” that spent several years in California before being treated to a refresh in 2018 that includes a new two-tone paint, custom marine vinyl upholstery, insulation and more. What makes the bus unique is its upgraded 2.0L Porsche power plant with dual Weber 40 IDF carburetors from a Porsche 912!Dressed in white and a 1972 color, Niagara Blue, this Tin Top’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition. The van’s windshield is newer while the rest of the glass panels are in good condition, including the rear window. Other new bits include a wiper motor, wiper arms, a front emblem, headlight trim, sideview mirrors and rear side marker lights. The van’s lights, including its Hella headlights, look great and the bodywork is in excellent condition. This loaf rolls on white, vented steel wheels topped by new chrome caps and Hankook Vantura LT radials, size 185R14 at all four corners. The van’s brakes are front disc/rear drum and were rebuilt earlier this year.Out back is a 2.0L flat four-cylinder engine from a Porsche 914 that previous owner states was refreshed with head work, valves, springs and related gaskets. The car has two, rebuilt Weber 40 IDF carburetors a new, stainless steel exhaust system and a new electric fuel pump. Backing up the motor is a four-speed manual transmission.Inside, there is new, custom upholstery in blue and white vinyl marine-grade vinyl over Dynamat insulation in front and simulated wood vinyl flooring in back. The seats are in overall great condition but there is a small blemish on the driver’s seat. The two-spoke steering wheel is in satisfactory order, as is the floor-mounted shifter with its extension and a wooden knob. The horn and temperature gauge are inoperable. The inner door panels, which have new window cranks, and the dashboard, with its VDO gauges are in similar shape. New quarter round and custom kick panels have been put in. There is a rear-facing seat, jump seat, table and bench seat are in the passenger compartment, with the bench seat folding flat into a bed. Rounding out the interior is a custom Kenwood sound system with a touchscreen with backup camera and speakers. For the 1973 model year, exterior revisions included relocated front turn indicators, squared off and set higher in the valance, above the headlights. Also, square-profiled bumpers, which became standard until the end of the T2 in 1979, were introduced in 1973. Crash safety improved with this change because of a compressible structure behind the front bumper. This meant that the T2 was capable of meeting US safety standards for passenger cars of the time, though not required of vans. The “VW” emblem on the front valance became slightly smaller.Competition to this VW Bus in 1973 included Chevrolet’s G10 Van, Dodge’s B-Series Ram Van, Ford’s Econoline Van and GMC’s VanDura.VIN: 2232215726Westfalia-Werke K.G.
