Description

For sale is my 1988 VW MK1 Cabriolet Best Seller Edition, Gray with Black interior, auto transmission (3-speed auto).
I bought this as a project car in early 2017 from a VW fanatic in Cleveland (He had done most of the previous work himself, he owned 6 of these). I have done a fair bit of work on this to get it to a level I was near happy with, with a few things left to do for it to be completely mint.
144K miles, however, these cars are renowned for going the miles and it has had a ton of work done over the last 3 years to keep the engine and general performance good. I have owned 3 of these now (2 in the UK, 1 here) and they are top cars. A real rare gem that really does turn heads. I have covered maybe 4,000 miles in the last 2.5 years, really only a weekend car in summer. I have had it kept in storage over winter.
Clean title, no finance, etc outstanding - I own this outright and have the title in hand. Car was posted on the VWMK1GOLF Instagram page, a few months ago under a 'cabrioweek' posting.
She starts the first time, takes a minute or two to warm up as is expected. But runs very smooth, at 60-75mph it cruises very well and is surprisingly good from the mark with a great sound.
I have owned this car for 2.5 years, and it has had the following work done (of which I have a ton of paperwork for too)
October 2016 - Full head refresh / Techtonics 268 cam and followersNovember 2016 - Schmidt 5 spoke alloys ($1,750) fitted.December 2016 - Timing belt / Hoses replaced / Replacement blue mohair convertible roof (circa $1,000)January 2017 - Clear side indicatorsApril 2017 - Undercarriage welding / Under passenger seat welding / Full flush / Sidearm ($1,000)May 2018 - Replaced the trunk interior, ripped out the old (rotten) wood and rubber, fixed and replaced with a gray carpet ($150).June 2018 - Front grille replacement / Front spot light replacement (2 spots, wide grille)May 2019 - $1,000 on full service / Several replacement hoses / Electrical enhancementsJune 2019 - Supersprint exhaust backbox/weld of custom pipe ($500) - Great sound.July 2019 - Full interior replacement - Old gray seats/carpet/door cards removed. Replaced with black custom made ones (From Germany) - $750 and self fitted.August 2019 - New steering wheel ($150).
There are, of course, a few things that still need doing as this was a project car. I have been super honest and listed below what I think needs doing. Some of this is really personal preference though -
- Paint job - The old paint is, in places, fading. On the front bonnet there is some bad fading, and some other panels also slightly fading.- Liner to the roof - The roof was never properly lined, so the old lining is a little damaged. Doesn/t leak into the car, is just cosmetic.- The back part of the roof needs stretching and clipping onto the trunk lining. A small job just have not got around to doing it. It will slightly leak into the trunk if there are a really bad storm and its outside (rare, as I keep it inside)- Battery - Is losing its life, probably needs a new battery.- Carpet - We replaced the carpet and bought a 'custom' fit black carpet panel. Turns out it wasn't all that well fit, and in places, it's badly cut and is not properly clipped down at the front. Again, a small job but haven't had time to fix it.- Passenger side seat - Doesn't move too well.
This is a great example of a classic car that has been treated pretty good considering its age.
Car is available to show in Brooklyn, NY (Greenpoint) and can also arrange to ship to the US region once payment has cleared.
No offers of PX / SWAPS etc -I am buying a new car already and have got what I need.
Tks,
