1971 VW Volkswagen Deluxe Grateful Dead “Sunshine Daydream” Penny Bus! NO RESERVE!!
Resurrected from the DEAD! This bus had a glorious past life of following the GRATEFUL DEAD around on tour and living its best life. After many years of wonderful times, the previous owner (one of the coolest people I have ever met) parked it back in 1992 after the bus stalled on him. He got it back home and parked it for the next 27 years. I was lucky enough to get my hands on it and refurbish it back to its old glory days! If you are looking for a bus for the coolness factor, look no further. This bus is looking for a new owner to keep the tradition of living free and making people happy! I tried to keep it as original as I got it so it still shows it rad patina sunset yellow coming through its newer blue paint. Original Grateful Dead stickers and license plate frame tell a story of an original hippie bus! Everything else on this bus has been restored and / rebuilt including a one of a kind custom penny floor. Overall, I am confident that this is one of the coolest buses out there with a great story. I don’t want to sell but have other unfinished projects and would love to see someone enjoy this bus and show it like it deserves! This bus makes people happy. “I LOVE YOUR SMILE”. Exterior- The paint wouldn’t be for everyone but it was way too cool to change it! I fell in love with the yellow coming through the blue so much I named it the “Sunset Bus”. Bus was originally Sierra Yellow and then the previous owner painted it blue and white. Over time the original yellow has shown its beautiful face presenting the “Sunset Bus”. Paint shines up really nice and has a great gloss. Body / paint does have some issues such as a few scratches, dings, etc as to be expected for an older paint and original body but nothing major. Bumpers and rims show surface rust only so I cleared them to shine up the "patina" to match the "Sunset" theme. There is hardly any rust on this bus. It has been in California its whole life and managed to stay pretty dry. The frame, rockers, battery trays, cargo floor, window seals, etc are all dry and rust free. There is a little rust on the drivers floor board but nothing major. Comes with a brand new roof rack too. Overall, this is a very dry bus and the exterior shows really nicely.
Interior- For how awesome and cool the exterior looks, the interior is the crown jewel of this bus. I have always wanted to build a custom penny floor and finally found the right project for it. My 7 year old daughter and I glued over 3700 penny’s (one at a time) and then grouted and epoxied the floor to create an amazing conversation piece that leaves everyone in awe. The floor is stunning. Looks great in pictures but even looks better in person! I had all the seats professionally redone (expensive) by a reputable local shop. All the wood camping cabinets were also professionally rebuilt, burned, and stained. Custom VW logo side table, brand new sunset curtains, carpet, cd player / custom fabric speakers, etc. Headliner is original in near perfect condition. The interior is simply beautiful and even comes with a matching vintage cooler and original hippie quilt with original Grateful Dead stickers.
Mechanical- This bus has gone through a complete mechanical restoration. 1600 engine was completely taken apart, rebuilt, and put back together with all new parts and reinstalled. Engine is beautiful!!! Transmission shifts nicely with no issues. Brakes were completely rebuilt with new rotors, lines, shoes, pads, etc. The bus runs, drives, stops, etc as it should. Everything is new so the bus will need to be driven and tuned as needed. Tires are also newer. Drives like a very solid bus with no known issues.
