1990 Volkswagen Cabriolet Karmann Edition
Mileage: 124,241
Description:
It is that time of year to bring out the convertible and cruise to the beach with the top down. This little buggy has been in our family for a number of years, but with the kids out of the house, and a move to another state forthcoming, it is time to find a good home and let someone else enjoy it. This car has been well maintained. It was parked in the garage for most of its life and driven sparingly during warmer months. There are no serious rust issues besides a few tiny surface rust spots here and there. The motor starts right up and runs great. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly. The tires are in good shape. I believe two of the tires were replaced less than 5,000 miles ago, while the other two are older, but still have sufficient tread remaining. The paint is not perfect, but splotchy in spots.
I was planning to drive this car again this summer and therefore have spent a considerable amount of time and money on maintenance for the car in the past few months. However, I please note that the car is not currently operable because of an issue with the brakes and will need to be towed from my driveway in Upper Darby, PA (just west of Philadelphia). The story is that the brakes were beginning to get weak when it was last driven, so I installed a new master brake cylinder. However, this did not fix the issue. I talked to the mechanic that works on the car and he says that the next step would be to fiddle with the brake proportion valve, or perhaps the master cylinder I installed was defective. Rather than dealing with the hassle of fixing this myself, I want to sell the car and spend my time working on other projects and preparing to move. I have towing service through my insurance, and I believe it costs a flat rate of $50 for anywhere within a certain reasonable mile radius. This is option one.
As another option, if you are absolutely in love with this car (as I am) and positively intent on driving it away, I can call my mechanic over for a house call. He can also do the inspection and emissions after the car is operable again. His prices are super reasonable, and the final selling price of the car will increase to cover my costs. If this is what you really want, I will work with you, but I prefer the first option.
The recent work that has been completed includes the following:
new spark plugs
muffler
exhaust pipes from the catalytic converter to the tailpipe
master brake cylinder
battery (it is a better, higher powered battery than is required)
all three belts on the front of the engine
windshield wipers
various rubber hoses and fittings under the hood
two Kenwood 6x9 speakers mounted in the rear deck lid
The two interior door panels and two panels in the rear have been reupholstered with high quality black vinyl.
The underside was power-washed and inspected for rust before spray undercoating was applied sparingly
It had a new radiator, water pump, hoses, and thermostat installed the winter before.
The issues with the car are as follows:
The brakes are not currently working. The emergency brakes works fine.
The vinyl convertible top is showing its age, but still keeps water out. The top is currently taped with white tape in a few places. I am including a roll of heavy duty white vinyl and adhesive that can be used to patch the top (cost me $60 altogether), or a new top can be installed if you wish.
It has an aftermarket CD player that is not currently connected to the power source.
The air conditioning no longer works (a compressor can be purchased for under $200).
Other things:
The title is clear. I also have two manuals, two keys, and some spare odds and ends parts that will be included. The original white vinyl cover that fits on when the top is down is also included. Ideally, this car will go to an enthusiast who appreciates the Cabriolet. It is by no means a new car, but the imperfections give it character in my opinion. This is sure to be a classic for years to come and provide years of great service for the right person that wants to take care of her.
