Description

Due to some storage limitations, I am forced to part with my beloved '58 Beetle. The body on this car is almost completely free of any serious corrosion and is dressed in most of it's original coat of Fjord Blue with very cool patina. It's also optioned well, with an original roof rack, wheel wrap, and rear pop-out windows (not currently installed). For as long as I and the previous owner have owned this car, it has been kept in dry storage when not in use. Many new items have been replaced recently. Some of these items include:
-Completely new brake system (friction material, all hydraulics, hoses and hardware)
-5in. narrowed adjustable front beam
-Narrowed tie rod assemblies
-Gabriel new rear shocks
-Continental Cont-Pro front tires P145/65R15
-BF Goodrich Traction-TA rear tires P185/60R15
-Optima 'Red Top' dry cell battery
-Axle boots and wheel seals
-Full engine reseal
-New secondary ignition (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, condenser and points)
-Fuel tank cleaning
-Carburetor and fuel pump rebuild
-Full exterior weatherstripping and gasket set (windows- with molding insert, doors, fender beading, lighting gaskets, bonnet and boot gaskets)
-Deluxe rear pop-out windows
-Full interior parts (seat upholstery- with front cushions, door panels, headliner, carpeting and rubber floor mat set)
-Interior door handles, trim, and hardware
-New body trim set (polished aluminum finish)
-Many other duplicate or miscellaneous items
As I have a plethora of extra parts for this car, I'm sure there are several things I'm forgetting about. There are many duplicate parts I have contained in two crates. I do not have an itemized inventory of what's there, but all of these items will be included in the sale. The only item missing that I have not sourced is a windshield. The original is in poor shape and would need to be replaced. J-Bugs offers a replacement for around $59.
Mechanically, the car is definitely on point. It has the original 36hp AS40 engine that runs incredibly well. The previous owner did complete a full reseal with all new gaskets and seals. The engine is smooth, doesn't smoke or use any fluids, and has adequate power (for what it is). The transaxle is also original to the car (with non-synchronized first gear) and has been serviced with GL4. The clutch assembly was replaced during the engine reseal. All of the controls; brake, accelerator, steering and clutch have a light feel and operate just as they should. The shifter bushings are both new and provides a defined, error and play free shift. After purchasing, a commute from Kentucky to North Carolina was made without any problems.
The electrical system is the original 6-volt. With the Optima battery, the car has no trouble starting, whatsoever. There have been periods where the car sits a month or so without being used, and still starts almost immediately on its own with no battery tender or jumping. All of the components work and the electrical system is clean and well sorted. The car also has a functioning and very rare optional Bendix Sapphire II AM/FM radio installed. Even the wiper system is fully functioning with no transmission play, whatsoever.
As stated before, this car is almost completely rust free. However, there are a couple of small rust holes present in superficial areas; one under the left rear window, at the bottom of the driver side door post, and a small area in front of the right rear wheel. These areas are pictured above. The floor pans, heater channels, trunk, outer kick panels, and rear parcel shelf are all solid. The actual body, itself has most of it's original coat of paint, but the fenders and trunk lid have been resprayed. Being a '58, it does have the common weak spot from the trunk support mount that had a previous 'repair.'
In conclusion, this is a mostly original, very rust free example of a daily driver bug. It can either be an excellent starting point to result in a very nice restored specimen, or enjoyed and driven as the clean original car it is. This car has been very reliable, as it made several long highway commutes under my ownership to various car shows. It also gets attention everywhere I take it. I have most of the original documentation for this car, as well as every receipt for ever purchase I made. Quite a bit has been invested in this car, so this will be a reserve auction. I have many extra photos that can be shown at the buyer's request. **A YouTube search for "58 Volkswagen Beetle Engine Idling" will show a quick video displaying how well the engine runs.
