The boxy Volkswagen Transporter arrived on American shores in 1949, its effect and influence was immediate as there was truly nothing like it. Using standard Beetle components it was easy to maintain, find parts for and generally it was the most effective way to move small groups of people. Dubbed the Microbus, Volkswagen's unique transporter survived through the decades and evolved into several different vehicles. Its combination of economy and practicality made it an instant hit with the flower power generation of the 1960s. Their boxy design made them ideal canvases, whether it was adorned with political slogans or Grateful Dead decals and flowers. Of these Microbuses, the rarest is the 21 Window, as shown here. It was in many ways the Cadillac of Volkswagens as it was adorned with lots of trim and amenities otherwise absent on many of the other standard buses.
