History on this special car: this very solid collectibleP1800 ES originally came out of California in the 2009 period to a knowledgeable and very mechanically minded collector in Atlanta, Georgia, he worked on the car to improve it for his own collection, bringing it to higher level, show ready condition prior to cars move to Texas. Current owner has made a few tasteful and useful updates and upgrades to this car as well. Car still has all original Volvoglass except the new windshield, really just great for the history,
Engine/Transmission Specs: This particular B20F series engine has recently had full maintenance, excellent compression just taken for Summer 2017 with dry cold readings of 110 to 112 lbs, very even with only 2 lbs apart, has an electric fuel pump, according to the last owner, he felt the engine had been rebuilt when he worked on it, the compression verifies it, the rockers on the head look very nice when the valve covers were off, there is no other verification in the fil though, then a senior top European mechanic has just now gone through the engine as it had not really been driven for a while, now with all Felpro seals, parts, new timing chain cover and crankshaft seals, new valve cover gaskets, then the valves were set, installed new rear main seal, new water pump installed, has a reconditioned radiator, new thermostat with new fresh radiator coolant, the notes of work just performed go with this beautiful Volvo P1800ES, the transmission was taken out that had the original rope seal taken out and the newer neoprene seal installed, then new belts and hoses, then the radiator was fully flushed and fresh coolant added, then road tested to confirm this fine mechanical upgrading,In the setup of this engine, an uprated electronic ignition with new coil is added for added performance and reliability, when this was installed, the working Smith’s tachometer would not work with this setup, the points would make said tach work, the new technician has made great effort for the fresh and strong performance,
The specs on this ES engine produced 125 bhp by reducing the compression ratio with a thicker head gasket (engine variant B20F); although maximum power was slightly down the engine was less "peaky" and the car's on-the-road performance was actually improved, again this has the original 4 cylinder, 2.0 Bosch fuel injected engine that is verified with the “Numbers” just pulled to verify.
This engine couples to the four-speed transmission plus overdrive manual transmission along with the working factory air conditioning, here is a great example as one of only 8,077 examples of the ES built for the entire worldwide market in its’ two model years, the regular two door sports model for the international market has the original 1986 cc. 121.2cid, 4 cylinder, 2.0 Liter engine producing 130-135 horsepower @6000 rpm, 130 ft/lbs of torque@ 3500 rpm, has the over square bore at 3.5”, stroke of 3.2”, this is the ES setup is they have lower readings as explained,
From 1963 to 1972 the M41 gearbox with electrically actuated overdrive was a popular Laycock de Normanville unit option with the J-type through 1973, this had a slightly shorter ratio of 0.797:1 as opposed to 0.756:1 for the D-type, note that the overdrive effectively gave the 1800 series a fifth gear for improved fuel efficiency and decreased drivetrain wear, the above number sheet confirms all of this being correct, the clutch system engages and drives just fine with no signs of slippage, test driven to check, note that this wagon was designed for the ‘real world’ of use and sports handling enjoyment,
Interior: the dash pad has the Smith’s oil temperature, water temperature, oil pressure, fuel gauge and speedometer from the factory, the black factory dash pad is in fine condition, the newly covered front buckets are done in new black leather, both front and rear safety belts, the factory fold down rear seat in original vinyl, the rear package area has nice black carpet, the rear glass window works great with the support,
Mileage: shows as 103,637 that we cannot verify due to age on the chassis, hard to believe that high since this is so solid a body and all the mechanicals check, with the final fresh engine and transmission seal work completed, great cosmetics just completed, also with all new brake hoses and brake lines had to be replaced as the originals on the car were from 1972 showing how well this car has been babied, the braking system has been flushed and fresh Dot3 fluid used,
Underchassis/Suspension:Nice photos will document the really excellent original believed underchassis and good suspension, the floors are original and in nice fine clean condition, they are just now protected with WD40 to keep the solid condition, the side lower rocker ‘pinch welds’ are in really excellent condition, strong coil springs, the shocks are newer KYB units, this even has the factory nylon ‘rebound’ straps that go from the chassis to the lower trailing arms, very hard to find these units on a 1972 classic car, original rear lower panhard bar still in great condition, the front tie rod bushings were recently replaced for excellent handling, very nice underneath this rare car,
Body/Paint: from the examination, it appears that all of the body panels are as factory, very rust free from front to rear, this was painted up in Georgia by the previous owner after coming from California, the paint is done as the Deep Red and good quality with no signs of rust, it is a good but not perfect paint as the goal was to drive the show car, now the paint just has now been brought up nicely with the professionally ‘finisher’ using a high tech/high speed buffer to bring out the luste, looks like a great driven show car with a 8.5-9.0 quality today, i.e., again, very nice luster, the panels very straight but not concoursequality,
Bumpers/Stainless/Trim: the original bumpers are still in place, they are in very nice condition but have a very bit of minor patina on the chrome, they are recently buffed and polished with a nice presentation, photos show their condition, an area of real strength is the stainless trim all around the car, from the trim around the windshield to window trim to all exterior pieces that are buffed, the BEST trim are the best…the beautiful two high design rear quarter panel top pieces with their pointed top areas that are simply very top notch looking are shown very well in the photos,
Wheels/Tires: New tires are just recently mounted and balanced, this has the proper stock correct steel argent wheels with trim rings, these factory wheels are now restored in the argent color and then cleared, they are clearly stamped ‘Volvo Import’, the stampings has numbers of LP985, 684001, hard to find in such unmolested factory condition,

History of the P1800 ES: Volvo introduced its final P1800 variant, the 1800ES, in 1972 as a two-door station wagon with a frameless, all-glass tailgate, really wonderful design, here is one of only 8077 produced in the two years, 1972 and 1973, called In Sweden this was nicknamed Fiskbilen (The Fish van) due to its great visibility, this final design was chosen after two prototypes had been built by Sergio Coggiola and Pietro Frua with Frua's prototype, A Kamm-tailed wagon-back restyle was just the recipe. A pair of prototypes were built: one by Coggiola, and another by Pietro Frua (the P1800's original stylist, Pelle Pettersen, was a student of Frua's). Volvo considered both to be too avant-garde, and went with in-house Volvo designer Jan Wilsgaard's extended-roof vision instead, using frameless glass for the entirety of the hatch,
The result was the 1800ES Estate Wagon with its’ famous glass design, launched in the fall of 1971 as a 1972 model. In 1972, the ES sold alongside the standard coupe model but for 1973, this was the only 1800 sold new at the Volvo store, mechanically, it absorbed all of the latest-and-greatest 1800 coupe's driveline--two-liter fuel-injected four, four-wheel disc brakes, Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit--although a compression drop from 10.5:1 to 8.7:1 saw power drop to 112 net horsepower, compared to higher 130hp gross in '72; this stateside-only unit was dubbed engine variant B20F and said design was planned for practical and reliable use in the American traffic, the suspension remained the same as the coupe's partly because the ES weighed just 65 pounds more than a comparable coupe even with the extra two inches of length were all thanks to the rear bumper, Raketen ("the Rocket") located in the Volvo Museum, both Italian prototypes were considered too futuristic, and instead the in-house designer Jan Wilsgaard's proposal was accepted, very desired to enjoy this automotive design on the road, the ES's rear backrest folded down to create a long flat loading area with fantastic glass design made to be used in the worldwide audience, aKamm-tailed wagon-back restyle was just the recipe as a pair of prototypes were built: one by Coggiola, and another by Pietro Frua (the P1800's original stylist, Pelle Pettersen, was a student of Frua's) so Volvo considered both to be too avant-garde, and went with in-house Volvo designer Jan Wilsgaard's extended-roof vision instead, using frameless glass for the entirety of the hatch.
Summary:here is a famous European design in outstanding condition, repainted recently and now finished to be show driven for Summer of 2017, data tag showing this car originally was a California car, top recent professional mechanical work was recently completed for a growing cool investment for the worldwide market, a wonderful P1800 in the special ES model, this ultra rare and beautifully designed Volvo is offered at $30,950.
