Description

Here's your chance to own a rare and cool vintage 1970's car. It's a 1979 Volvo 242GT coupe. The original owner purchased this car in 1979 and held on to it before donating to charity back in March 2018. Knowing where the car would end up if I had not recued it, I had to pick it up and bring it home. Well, not HOME home, as I already have too many other projects here at the house, so this one has been in storage most of the time I have owned it. I have too much on my plate to give this car the attention it deserves, and I would like it to go to a good home. What you see in the photos is the car as I found it - I have not even washed it or attempted to remove any of the "patina" from under the hood. No trick photos, no greasy shiny stuff, no games.
This is a good solid car in nice shape for its age, the body is straight but the paint is shot. You could go either way with this car - vintage everyday driver or full restoration, it's up to you. I think the car has a great patina as it is and still gets looks. Having spent most of its life in dry hot Southern Arizona, the only hint of rust is on the passenger side rocker panel, which looks as if the original owner attempted to fend off the rust long ago by sanding and priming the spot. There is also a small spot of rust through on the rear driver side in the spare tire well where it looks like water probably got inside the trunk and worked its magic. What you see in the trunk well in the photo is a lot of DIRT, not rust. I left it there as evidence of the issue - you can see the hole from the outside photo. I have more photos but not enough room to fit them here.
The interior is in fairly good shape as it had covers over the front seats but unfortunately the rubbing of the cover over the seat material caused some wear on the upper left corner of the passenger seat back and also a spot on the driver seat. Also, as is quite typical of the GT upholstery, it is "loose and saggy" as can be seen in the photos. The carpet is in great shape as it has been covered by the original all-weather deep floor mats. The original stereo is in the trunk and was replaced by an AIWA CD player. The air conditioner does not blow cold but the system held vacuum for about 36 hours when I last had it here at the house. The blower motor works on all speeds. There is a single crack in the dash top just to the right of the instrument cluster as can be seen in the photos.
The car has the original 2.1l engine and 4 speed + OD transmission. It passed the Arizona vehicle emission check back in February of 2018, which should tell you all you need to know about the running condition! Although when I got the car the high pressure fuel pump was bad, I put in a new one along with new fuel accumulator, pump relay, filter, and battery and I was back in business. And then it sat. It runs well but as with most K-jet cars of this vintage, it is sometimes a bit temperamental when cold, especially after a long rest (a week or two of sitting) but runs great once warmed up.
Due to a paperwork issue (MISTAKE by the dealer who helped me procure the car) it took me until yesterday to receive marketable title to the car. No worries, it's all good and legal now! I have clean and clear Vermont registration (they don't issue titles over 15 years old) which will allow you to register and title the car in any state.
Now for the unpleasant RULES:The car is located in Paradise Valley, Arizona, 85253. Prospective purchasers are welcome to come and see the car before bidding if you are local. I welcome any and all PRE-purchase inspection. Once you win the bid, the car is yours and a 500 dollar deposit is due by Paypal within 24 hours, balance in cash upon pickup. Full payment is due within 7 days whether or not you have taken delivery of the car. If you arrive to pick up the Volvo and you believe it is not as I have described, I will refund your deposit and you will be under no obligation to purchase. Easy as that! Any questions, please feel free to ask and I will get you an answer as soon as I can. Thanks and good luck!
