SUMMARY
Original 390 cubic inch American Motors V8In the gearhead world, some words just don't go together. For instance, even though style is a matter of opinion, "beautiful Edsel" usually isn't thrown around too much. "Classic Honda" definitely isn't a combination you hear too often. And "electric street rod" seems about as natural as "vanilla bean chocolate". But, in case you couldn't tell, your friends at RK Motors Charlotte enjoy unique phrasing as much as we love unique cars. And that's why we're happy to use the words "affordable sports car" to describe this awesome 1970 AMX. With less than 1,000 miles on its professional, ground-up restoration, this classic wraps an original, 390 cubic inch V8 and original 3-speed transmission in striking Big Bad Blue war paint. And at only $46K it's the perfect way for any enthusiast to grab a cool old car and enjoy every aspect of the hobby. Sounds good right? Well, here's the bad news: any time we get an AMC, there's a virtual free-for-all of people scrambling to throw down the first deposit. In fact, our last two American Motors offerings, a Mark Donohue Javelin and 1970 Rebel Machine, sold before they even hit the website. So, if you take a liking to this razor-sharp coupe, you'd better act quickly!
The AMX is so much more than just a sawed-off Javelin, and this car's VIN tells us quite a bit of valuable information.
BODYWORK/TRIM
Much cleaner than when it originally rolled down the Kenosha, Wisconsin assembly line, this slick little coupe has been transformed in to a take-no-prisoners street warrior that shines at the strip AND the show. You'll feel like a flag-waving patriot encased in the car's professionally finished Big Bad Blue paintwork, which has been applied over a very clean body. There are no signs of rust or rot, suggesting that body was a straight, trouble-free canvas before its metamorphosis began. Not surprisingly, panel gaps are good enough to make black C-stripes line up exactly right. And overall, the car is so well done that many unsuspecting bystanders will be fooled into thinking this is how it roared right off the showroom floor.
Championing what some consider the perfect blend of muscle and sport, the AMX's tidy dimensions belie its outsized presence. Aimed directly at the Chevy Corvette from a performance standpoint, AMC took a much more flamboyant approach when it came to appearance. At the front of the car, a flush, 1970-exclusive grille centers clean "AMX" lettering between large headlights, ornate parking lamps and a heavy chrome bumper. Behind that bumper, a small chin spoiler flows in to tall body panels that are detailed with color-keyed mirrors, checkered "390" emblems and Trendsetter side pipes. Opposite those pipes, a 'power bister' hood anchors lightly tinted glass between straight stainless trim and massive "AMX" emblems. And behind those emblems, 1970-exclusive tail lights center an "AMX" branded reverse lamp between a small American Motors badge and second chrome bumper.
ENGINE
Lift the long blue hood and you'll find a 1970-exclusive, 390 cubic inch V8 that creates a respectable 325 horsepower. Original to the car, this mill hangs a December 3rd, 1969 assembly date above correct 390 casting numbers. At the top of the light blue block, a functional Go Package rams air in to a polished filter case and correct 4-barrel carburetor. Below that carburetor, a correct intake feeds correct 51cc heads that are fitted with attractive chrome valve covers. Sparks are sequenced through 7mm Standard Triple Silicon wires via a familiar points distributor. Opposite that distributor, fully restored exhaust manifolds jettison charred dinos in to rowdy, true-dual pipes. And, at the front of it all, a heavy duty radiator circulates water through pliable hoses and traditional tower clamps. This AMX's clean engine bay is a nice combination of form and function, featuring reproduction decals, a snazzy AM washer reservoir and a big brake booster. And everything from the car's fenders to its firewall is coated in excellent Big Bad Blue paint.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
Take one look under this sporty coupe and you'll find a fully sorted chassis that's certainly equipped to back up the car's sinister good looks. Just aft of the big bore engine, an original Borg Warner AS6-12 3-speed twists torque to a posi-traction rear end. That smooth drivetrain feeds a 1970-exclusive double wishbone front and rear leaf suspension, which is shackled to factory power steering. Cool and confident stops are provided by Safe Command power front disc and rear drum brakes. Above that impressive hardware, solid floors have been properly undercoated; instead of polished in a nice shade of body-matched basecoat like so many over-restored classics that roll through our showroom. At the corners of those floors, rare Machine wheels spin E60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs around stainless trim rings and blue-detailed center caps. And a thorough examination of all the car's bushings, lines and hoses ensures it has road going reliability that matches its eyeball-popping curb appeal.
INTERIOR
If you prefer your muscle cars flashy, you'll definitely appreciate this AMC's correct Black interior. The car's clamshell perches are firm to the touch, featuring pliable leather covers that present very well. In front of those seats, a 1970-exclusive dash hangs rebuilt gauges, an American Motors radio and Weather Eye climate controls in a broad swath of wood applique. Below that dash, a Shift-Command shifter rides top-dead-center on a correct, wood-trimmed console. At the base of that console, fade-free carpet is protected by "AMX" branded floor mats. At the sides of that carpet, black door panels sprinkle more wood trim amidst bright chrome hardware. In front of the driver, a 2-spoke Rim Blow steering wheel spins a large wood rim around a patriotic horn button. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk hides a Space saver spare tire.
