Description

1962 Austin Healey Sprite MkII

In full British humor, the advertising for the Sprite pushed the bounds. One ad in particular states "If he drives a Sprite he's a bachelor...or else he's married and wants a second car he can race." Donald Healey was hell bent on producing a fun affordable sports car, that had some power to boot.

For consignment a MkII version of the venerable Sprite. Several repairs and replacements within the last 1,000 miles have brought this car up to snuff, and it is running very chipper.

Exterior
With the advent of the MK II we are beginning to see the trappings of the Healey/MG era with both cars looking eerily similar. Bathed in Red paint, which presents nicely with just a tinge of some orange peel, but overall very nice. Speaking of very nice the chrome, trim and badging on this car is excellent. From the headlights and fog lights fronting the grille to the windshield trim, rear trunk mounted luggage rack, and simple chromed "bumperettes" on the rear, it's all sparkling like new. Gaps are well minded and top presents in good shape in black canvas. Standard steel wheels topped by AH engraved dog dish caps all around, and we are ready to hop inside.

Interior
Very nicely preserved black vinyl jump seat style buckets are wrapped with white piping. Black carpet, which is very, nice covers the floors. A mixture of red and black vinyl creates the door panels. The simple black dash has all working instruments and plenty of knobs and toggles to play with as you tool on down the back roads. Worth the price of admission...an original steering wheel with its winged center sits proudly in front of the dash, and is awaiting you to give it a spin. Within the center hump, is a red cowled gearshift lever which adds a little highlight to the black interior. The nice black tonneau cover gives the car a good aerodynamic look.

Drivetrain
A small but mighty 1098cc 4-cylinder engine rests comfortably within the clean engine bay. It is topped with a single Weber 2-barrel carburetor and has a 4-speed manual transmission. A few repairs are noteworthy under this hood, and include a new fuel filter, rebuilt Weber carb and manifold, a voltage regulator, a no points Petronix Electronic distributor, coil, plugs and plug wires...all are under 1,000 miles of use.

Undercarriage
Very clean and mostly covered with ground effects metal, we see slight surface rust on un-rustproofed metal which is typical. Rear axle seals have been replaced, and new brakes all around. A small rear main seal leak is seen which is typical of these era British cars. Consigner states a new clutch has been put on as well.

Drive-Ability
An immediate start when you turn the key. Let her warm up a bit, and we are off! Smooth shifts as we go up through the gears. Nice sports car feel, snappy acceleration, and all in all a comfy ride. Wind in your hair, sun on your neck and it does not get any better than this!

Some major recent work to bring this Sprite up to near perfect working order. Very affordable, very British, and very cool, it will go very quickly.
