Description

I am sad to be departing with my beloved 1988 M5. It is a real enthusiast machine and a head-turner for those in the know. According to Wikipedia, the e28 M5 “remains among the rarest regular production BMW Motorsport cars – after the BMW M1 (456 units), BMW E34 M5 Touring (891 units) and the BMW 850CSi (1510 units).” Moreover, the straight six S38 motor is a piece of beauty and a sight to behold. This example is all original, and in fairly good condition—great condition considering the mileage (225,000)! The interior exhibits a reasonable amount of wear and tear, although the seats are in exceptional condition considering the mileage (I believe them to be refinished). The dash is cracked, buttons faded, some seat belts not complete, and the radio is missing (at some point an aftermarket unit and woofer was installed). The mechanics are very serviceable, however—the car drives fine, although it needs some bushings, shocks, and TLC generally. It has, moreover, had many semi-recent service items including a new water pump, new OEM fuse box, SLS replacement, shift linkage bushing replaced, etc. (and new Michelin Pilot Sports about 600 miles ago). The body panels all have VIN stickers except a “DOT-R” sticker under the hood. I have always cared well for the car as I love it dearly, but with a project home and a baby I just have not had time to tackle every non-essential project. I purchased the car in June 2015 and have put less than 2000 miles on it during that time. The car has very little rust, just surface rust on the inside lip of the trunk, within the truck itself, and a very slight amount on the lip of the front fender—all pictured at the link below. Additionally, the trunk carpeting is missing, the windows are tinted, and the fuse box needs to be reinstalled correctly (wipers and high-beams not currently working as a result). Every now and then the tachometer and power door locks fail intermittently, due to a bad connection somewhere. The paint shows evidence of touch-ups and is oxidized (it buffs out well, as you can see in the photos). The air conditioning works, but the heat does not blow hot. I also detect a slight flutter in the rear end starting off at very low speed, and there is some throttle lag when the engine is extremely cold. I, however, drive the car regularly. The car needs some sorting, but it is a good driver’s car and the value certainly isn't going down!
