Fox Motorsports purchased this 1940 Buick Century 61C Convertible Phaeton from a local collector in 2011. It has been under our care since, always in climate-controlled storage (and on a battery tender) when not in use. The previous owner purchased the Buick in Wisconsin in 1985. It was disassembled but painted and complete. It is said to be a Wisconsin car from new, confirmed by period riveted key ring noting: Racine Buick Co., R. R. Birdsall, Pres., 915 Washington Ave., Racine, WI. Once completed, the previous owner drove the Buick on nice days and displayed it at car shows in Michigan.
This Buick is in excellent condition, especially given its age. The motor was professionally rebuilt in 2004. The 3-speed manual transmission was rebuilt around the same time. It shifts smoothly and was just inspected and serviced, including resealing the torque ball and rear differential. A recent full fluid and brake service included rebuilding the fuel pump and brake cylinders along with a new brake master cylinder plus fresh wheel seals and bearings. The dash clock was also cleaned and lubricated, and is in full working order. The tires were updated to modern ‘vintage’ Firestone rubber by the previous owner. Around the same time, the exhaust was upgraded to stainless steel, the radiator was re-cored, and the generator was rebuilt.
The car is cosmetically in very good condition and has undergone a recent, thorough paint detail. The interior was reupholstered in red leather in 1998, along with matching red carpet. The black convertible top is in excellent condition and was also replaced in 1998. The original steering wheel rim has been recast and is crack free. The interior “woodgrain” was hand painted by a local specialist. The car was painted by the Wisconsin owner in 1981 and is showing typical patina but continues to show well despite some blemishes. The chrome and polished stainless trim are in good condition, with only minor pitting. The door sill plates are newer reproduction parts, as are the running boards.
The canvas boot cover along with the correct jack, wheel chock, fender skirts, and front bumper overriders are all included, along with a car cover and stainless door trim (see photos).
