Description
This is originally a 1970 Chevelle Malibu convertible, automatic with a 350 engine. It rolled off the Baltimore Assembly Plant on May 11, 1970. I bought it on May 4, 1989, with 154, 641 miles on it, so I have had it for almost 27 years. The kid I bought it from said he used to take it up to New York State to drag race and had recently had the engine overhauled and the cylinders rebored. However, the rest of the car was in sad shape, and he could not afford to get all of the necessary repairs for PA inspection, so his dad was making him sell it.
I put a new exhaust system on it as soon as I got it, and then started making 2 - 3 trips each year to the car show and swap meets in Carlisle, PA and Englishtown, NJ for new replacement parts. I put a new interior in it - seat covers, door panels, and carpet. I had the local auto body shop put two new rear quarter panels on it and I got a new SS type hood in the early - mid 1990’s. It was then that I decided to try my best to make it look like an SS 396, so I had the body shop take off the ugly Malibu chrome parts and put SS 396 ones on. I replaced the steering wheel with a used SS one, put on a used SS rear bumper pad, and got new front parking light covers. I had the stripes put on when the car was painted, also in the early - mid 90’s.
I probably had the car about 10 years when I let a mechanic friend of mine from church do some engine work. He replaced the original two barrel carb and intake manifold with a four barrel carb and intake, along with a new HEI distributor and some other small changes. Well, that was a bit of a mistake since the car never ran quite as well after that. I still have most of the old engine parts stored in a few boxes.
I have taken pretty good care of the car since I got it. It has never been driven in the rain and has always been garage kept. But I have been lazy and have not really done any work on it it the last 15 years. It has Classic Car tags on it here in PA, so that means I have to get it inspected every year, which I do.
The current mileage is approx. 187, 413 miles, so I have put a little over 30,00 miles on it in 27 years. But I hardly drive it any more, so it is a bit stupid to keep it when someone else might really enjoy it a lot. When I had it inspected on July 7, 2005 the mileage was 185, 723, so I have only driven it about 2000 miles in the last 10 years!
The car looks great, I think, but when you get up really close, you will see many imperfections. Here are the things that would need attention if you seriously wanted to show the car. There are lots of light surface scratches, a ding or two, a small paint bubble, etc. The rear is lifted up by air shocks that I put on shortly after I got the car, and they are still working, amazingly. I think the convertible top is the original and looks pretty good, but does show wear - it has a small nick in it. The stitching on the inside is giving away on both sides right where the top latches are, so I fold them over and let the latch help hold the pieces of fabric from hanging down. I bought a new boot for the top a few years ago, but I already put a tear in the plastic piece that slides into the groove. The valve cover gaskets need to be replaced, esp. the left side. It has had a small leak for several years and I have been lazy about replacing it, so I have a piece of cardboard on the garage floor for oil drips. I put a CD player in it where the original radio was and 2 speakers in the door panels. The CD player skips pretty badly when driving the car over bumps, but the radio works just fine. My mechanic recommends putting in a new steering box, since there is a lot of play in the steering and he can’t adjust it properly. I had to put two new tires on the front for the most recent inspection. Futura GLS Super Sports from Pep Boys, so they don’t match the Cooper Cobras that are still on the back. (Some photos may still show the old front tires.) The trunk lid needs a new lock - the old one got jammed somehow and I just use a flat screwdriver to open it. The trunk is in very good shape. The front door panels have some small rips at the bottom because of my feet hitting it when I get out and the rear panels have small tears at the top. There is a small piece of sheet metal missing from the space where the convertible top piston is on the driver‘s side. The glove box lid should be adjusted a bit, since it doesn’t close tightly.
