1958 CHEVROLET CAMEO APACHE, RESTO MOD, PATINA, SURVIVOR, C10, PICKUP, FLEETSIDE
Description
TRUE GARAGE FIND!This is a real survivor ready for its next phase in life. Here is the story of this rare 1958 Cameo. This truck was found stored away in a garage in Ohio just a few months ago. I have the title from the second owner that bought this Cameo in 1973 and licensed it till 1985. This truck then went through a series of modifications and restorations through the years to get it to the stage you see it today. The truck was a rust free unit when taken off the road in 1985 and it is very visible that it is rock solid both on the outside and looking underneath when put on a lift (see pics). NO cab rot, no door rot, no floor or sill rot and no bed box rot. The original frame is in excellent rust free condition also. Now for what has been done... first off the original drive line has been removed and replaced by a crate late model Vortec V8 and rebuilt 700R4 with all new mounts and trans cross member. New balanced driveshaft attaches to a late model 10 bolt gm rear end. All four corners have been converted to modern GM 5 lugs with new spindles and disc brakes up front. New GM power brake unit and booster has been installed also. New radiator and hoses also were done to insure cool running on those hot months. Power steering was added and not a factory option.Frame is straight and very clean with new undercoating added, all four corners have all new springs and shocks installed also.Interior has been a bit customized with a smoothed dash and square a/c ports cut in. Now it is my understanding that at the time nobody made a retro cool vintage air unit for this series of truck at the time so the owner was going to adapt a 80's Cutlass or Monte Carlo unit to get the effect that he wanted without using a clunky underdash unit. Floors in the cab are rock solid and a set of short back bucket seats have been installed. New glass and seals are installed in the cab and all glass is clear with NO cracks. A new wiring harness with modern blade type fuses has been installed but some detail work and mounting of the panel needs to be done. The bed is in great shape with NO fiberglass damage and all the trim either installed on the bed or I have 3 boxes of trim and moldings that come with the truck, its all there. The grill, nose trim, headlight rings, front and rear bumpers and bumperets on the rear are all steel originals that have been re-chromed and in excellent condition. The truck has been repainted a non-original GM orange and white combo with what appears to be a single stage paint. Overall the body condition is a solid solid 10 but the quality of the paint job is a 8 with some runs visible and a much needed buff and touch ups. With some research I have found that the consensus is that maybe a actual 500 1958 Cameos were sold in early 1958 to use up the remaining Cameo fiberglass bed sides produced for the 1957 model. Later in 1958 the new all steel "Fleetside" bed was introduce for a more spacious and durable bed to be used from then on.This truck was found and not even dusted off, simply drain the bad gas, put a new battery in it, change the oil and started. This truck runs great (needs plugs), shifts well and brakes but the left front pulls a bit. If you a Cameo nut, this truck has been off the grid since 1985 and now resurfaced with a clear 1973 Ohio title in hand (second owner). Please feel free to PM me with questions!
