This vehicle was originally purchased brand new on 12/26/86 by Arthur Tracy from Sheehan Pontiac in Lighthouse Point, FL. I purchased it from him on 12/21/94, so it is a true documented 2 owner car. I havethe vehicle registration certificates. It has only been registered in Maine (Arthur’s second residence) and Florida. This is a TRUE ’87 EL CAMINO SS (badged at the factory as a GMC Caballero El Diablo), the final year of production. I have the original build sheet and this is a RARE, FULLY OPTIONED vehicle.
What makes this vehicle rare is that it is a TRUE SS (El Diablo) WITH FACTORY BUCKET SEATS, CONSOLE AND TACHOMETER. Most of them were non-SS cars and many of the SS’s had a bench seat w/column shift and/or no tach. I believe every possible option you could get from the factory is on this car.
This was my primary vehicle until 2001 and it has never let me down. It starts right up, runs well, shifts smoothly and cruises down the road without squeaks or rattles. When I purchased it, it had over 53,000 original miles on it. Today it has over 208,500 which you would never know by driving it. The transmission was completely rebuilt in ’00 @138,000 miles. THE ORIGINAL 305 W/TRUE DUAL FLOWMASTER EXHAUST IS THROATY AND SOUNDS AWESOME!!!
The interior is in good condtion for it’s age. NO CRACKS IN THE DASH!!! The driver’s seat shows wear but the passenger side looks almost new. The inner door panels are in very good condition as well. Inner and outer window weatherstrips are brand new on driver’s side (passenger side set included with sale). Also COMPLETE BRAND NEW CARPET KIT INCLUDED WITH SALE!!!
The exterior of the car is mostly original lacquer from the factory. There were no accidents reported when I purchased the car but Arthur wasn’t the most careful person so there are dings and scratches here and there. The only areas of the vehicle that have been repainted are the passenger front fender and door, the tailgate and the upper area around the outside of the bed. The door and fender were repainted when I bought it but began to fade a few years later, so I resprayed them. The tailgate and upper outer bed area had some blemishes mostly from the hard tonneau cover wearing away the paint.
A BRAND NEW STEEL COWL HOOD WAS JUST INSTALLED! …because the original was rusting out. The new hood could use some adjusting. The bottom of the passenger door has some rust issues so I will include a NEW STEEL REPLACEMENT DOOR WITH SALE. There is one area of rust on the upper part of the bed that is smaller than a nickel. All other blemishes are minor and cosmetic only. The frame shows only minor surface rust, but is straight and cancer free.
SUMMARY OF NEW PARTS:
- Steel cowl hood
- Passenger side door (not installed)
- Complete carpet kit (not installed)
- Inner and outer upper door window felts for both doors (only driver’s side installed)
- New chrome lug nuts and C3 Corvette center caps
- Driver’s side power window and door lock switches
Issues not already mentioned: A/C doesn’t work (all dampers do however!!!), Leaks some engine oil and tranny fluid (the more frequently it’s driven, the less it leaks), Heater core doesn’t work (re-routed), Wipers are intermittent (not in a good way), Leaks water around upper windshield area on driver’s side when it rains (could use a new visor), Tachometer works but is off by 500-1000 rpm, Oil pressure gauge stopped working recently, Could use a good front end alignment, Cruise control does not work
The persons who will appreciate this car will because of it’s rarity and documentation of only 2 owners. I have most of the original parts minus the original radio and one GMC wheel center cap. All of the modifications are bolt-on’s which can easily be put back to stock.
