1990 Chevrolet Caprice 9C1 TBI 350 Police Package with many heavy duty options
Description
Available for sale is my 1990 Chevrolet Caprice 9C1. Among many great options, it is optioned with the L05 350 and heavy duty rear differential.
I am the second private owner of this vehicle. I had no intention of selling this car, but I need to move in a few weeks and
I will not take the car with me.
The previous owner purchased the car from their local police department in the mid 90's. It is a true 9C1 optioned car,
meaning it was manufactured for police use. The car was garaged by the previous owner and by me until late 2016.
It has many heavy duty police specific options such as:
* 350 5.7 Throttle Body Fuel Injected V8
* Certified speedometer (goes to 120mph)
* Heavy duty suspension
* Heavy duty rear differential (3.42 gears and 8.5" 10 bolt rear differential)
* Posi-traction
* Larger rotors and drums
* Dual sway bars
* Transmission and oil coolers,
* Heavy duty seats
* Heavy duty Rubber floor
* Additional dome light
* Chrome mirrors.
Thanks to the engine and 3.42 rear gear options, It is considerably faster than a civilian 305 powered Caprice. Although not impressive by today's standards, it can do a 0-60 in around 9.1 seconds when full size cars built on the B-body platform from this time period performed roughly 11-14 seconds on average.
I have included a high resolution picture of the RPO's for those interested in the exact option numbers that this car came with.
The car came optioned with an auxiliary gauge cluster but the factory gauges stopped working and have been replaced with aftermarket gauges.
The harnesses for the original gauges are still intact. Also, the car came equipped with a spotlight originally, but the spotlight hole
was filled by the previous owner. The light bar holes have also been filled by the previous owner.
I have owned the car for nearly 9 years. I purchased it in 11/2010 and it was my daily driver all throughout college and I still drive it regularly roughly 90 miles per day. The car has approximately 313,000 miles, of which I have personally driven 100,000. The mileage will vary upon sale.The oil and transmission fluid were changed at regular intervals and I have personally done the vast majority of maintenance to the vehicle myself. I have also replaced the pcv valve, radiator cap, fuel cap, and fuel filter at regular intervals.
The goodThe engine holds great oil pressure (roughly 25 PSI at idle and 50-60 while driving on the highway). The previous owner ran Mobile One 5w30 synthetic engine oil, but I have since switched to Castrol 10w30 synthetic blend and I change the oil regularly.
The transmission is easily one of the best feeling transmissions that I have ever owned. It was rebuilt professionally in the early 2000's and shifts flawlessly. I have driven several 77-90 9C1's and the transmission shifts better than any stock 9C1 that I have ever driven. The transmission has been filled with mobile 1 fully synthetic ATF fluid and the pan fluid and pan gasket have been changed every 50,000 miles.
The previous owner also installed aftermarket speakers and mounted custom plates in the trunk to prevent things from sliding into the body. He also replaced the original vinyl seat with a period correct 9C1 heavy duty seat that matches the front seats.
The engine top end was completely rebuilt professionally in the early 2000's. It is the factory roller motor bored .010 over with upgraded HD valve springs and a double roller timing chain. The previous owner also installed stainless steel valve covers and a Moroso air cleaner. The vehicle has a K&N air filter (which I have cleaned every 25,000 miles), dual exhaust behind Y pipe with Flowmaster mufflers and a high-flow cat.
The transmission was completely rebuilt professionally shortly after the engine rebuild. The transmission was modified to strengthen the high gear clutch pack and a new torque converter was installed.
The vehicle was professionally painted with metallic sapphire blue that closely matches the original paint. The headliner was professionally replaced and is in excellent condition.
I have personally installed heavy duty Moog front and rear springs and Bilstein shocks all around and have the receipts if necessary. The car handles beautifully, but the steering is a little loose.
I have also rebuilt the throttle body and replaced the fuel injectors. The car idles beautifully but could use a set of new spark plugs.
The bad:The car has consumed oil throughout all my years of ownership. I have to regularly add oil between oil changes. The bottom end seems to be original to the car so this can be expected for over 300,000 miles.
The car came optioned with AC but I removed the compressor after it seized on me while I was driving. I replaced the compressor with a bypass pulley, but I will supply the buyer with the ac compressor line that I removed to make room under the hood.
During the winter of 2014, I was victim to a hit and run and unfortunately the driver side fender, front clip, front bumper, and inner fender were significantly damaged.I could not afford to get the car professionally repaired at the time so I purchased the pictured driver side fender and front clip and inner fender at the junkyard.
The parts came off of a 1987 civilian Caprice equipped with a 4.3 engine. I also installed brand new aftermarket bumper filler. The radiator support got bent as well and I was able to bend it back near its original form. While I had the radiator support exposed, I also painted it, but my paint job was far from optimal and the radiator support has now developed rust. I also used the rear bumper from the donor car because mine was dented by the previous owner. Unfortunately the bumpers came optioned with the bumper strip but the car originally came with plain bumpers so the bumpers are not the factory optioned ones. I made a minor attempt at painting the fender but stopped and never finished. I had always told myself that I would get the car restored so I just drove as is for the past 5 years.
I purchased a second car early in 2017 and have since kept this car outside.
The exposure to the elements has created and accelerated many rust formations.
In the past two years, the car has rusted considerably although it is manageable for someone with the right body work experience. There is minimal rot and there is a 3" wide opening in the drivers side floor. I have placed gorilla tape over the hole to keep the car relatively quiet on the inside but the floor needs to be repaired.
After being outside for the past two years the car has developed the typical Chevy rust and the previously existing rust as accelerated and expanded. Because the car was garaged for most of its life, the underbody is still very clean for what it is though.
I have included exhaustive pictures of all the imperfections. If you would like any specific pictures, please let me know and I will happily send more.
The drivers side seat fabric has been completely destroyed and I have used gorilla tape to keep the seat manageable in the summer.
The car has an exhaust leak from the manifold and the custom dual exhaust setup has been repaired but has been prone to leaks in the past.
The car is far from perfect, but it is dependable and can transport me to and from work and I would not hesitate to drive it regularly. Without a doubt, the car needs a lot of repairs and restoration. Given the rarity of this vehicle, I believe it is worthy of restoration and I would like it to go to the right person. In parts alone there is a lot of value. I have always believed that I would take this car to 1,000,000 miles and I am sad to see it go.
Shipping and payment I am willing to arrange for shipping throughout the US, Canada, and Europe at the buyers expense.
I am willing to also personally deliver the car within a 100 mile radius for $1.00/mile.

Additionally, for uncompressed photos, see the following link below for a zip archive containing over 1 gigabyte of uncompressed photos. I heavily encourage everyone to download these photos onto a PC or laptop rather then a smart phone. They go into much further detail than what could be uploaded here. For those that are far away, this is critical as I have outlined practically every imperfection in these photos.
Copy and paste the below link into your browser and I encourage you to scan the file for viruses before extracting. It is just an archive with over a gigabyte of photos.
