1970 CAMARO SS W/ RS COPO & L78 OPTIONS (396, 4 SPD, 12BOLT, PARTIAL BUILDSHEET)
Description
Just finishing up an extensive 6-month long improvement project on this special 1970 true RS SS car presently optioned with 1970 date coded L78 solid lifter engine, WB code M20 4speed Muncie trans, and correct casting #341 12 bolt Posi rear end, along with RS and COPO RPO #9697 optioning. Beautiful example of a rare optioned car. Appears to be an all original sheet metal car, never having any rust repair or replacement panels. This includes all factory floors and trunk pans in exceptional condition.GM stamping and date coding present on the cars sheet metal. The window glass in the car appears to be original dated glass in excellent condition. The chrome bumpers appear to be GM not reproduction that were re-chromed. The front RS grill chrome trim appears to be GM and is made of the correct pot metal. I am told the reproductions are made of plastic. This Camaro also has date coded GM "Guide" light lens. All door rubbers, felts were replaced during the painting of this car along with the new vinyl top. The F70 -14 Good Year tires are not reproduction and are exactly what GM installed on the 1970 Camaro in 1970. These F70 non-reproduction tires are almost extinct and almost impossible to find. They are in excellent condition! If you find a set of the F70 -14 originals, be prepared to pay a small fortuneto obtain them. Fortunately for the buyer of this car, they are included with the sale of the car. The Dog Dish wheel caps also appear to be Genuine GM, not reproduction! This car retains the GM spiral shocks. The front disc brake calipers appear to be original in good working order! The body panel fitment of this car is the best I have ever seen on a 2nd Gen Camaro. I attribute this to the car's retention of the GM body plant adjustments that have never been monkeyed with. The current odometer reading on this car is 75,986 miles. The fitment of the front RS nose pad is excellent!
This car was delivered new to Steakley Chevrolet in Texas (one of the dealers listed in the official High Performance Dealer Index along with Gibb, Motion, Yenko, Ewing, Berger, and Nickey Chevrolet) and later spent until recently the remainderof its time in California garaged indoors, thus the exceptional condition of the metal on the car. This car was being assembled by GM's Van Nuys plant and delivered to Texas as a new car right around the same time (late March 1st week April) that Vince Piggins of Chevrolet had just completed a new tall prototype spoiler design for the Camaro in which Chevrolet intended to use at the upcoming SCCA Trans Am race scheduled to be held at Dallas International Speedway on April 26th 1970. At this time, Vince Piggins ordered several dozen sets of 3-piece "COPO 9796" spoilers be sent to Texas dealers in the Dallas area to be immediately installed on 1970 Camaros to combat a complaint by Penske that the spoiler designed by Chevrolet was not a production RPO that could be ordered or dealer installed on Camaos bought and sold to the general public, and therefore Penske argued use of the spoiler would be illegal to be used in the upcoming SCCA race.
Ironically, the spoiler was approved for the race due to Piggin's fast acting to equip common Camaro's with the spoiler, but the April 26th race was cancelled due to rain. It would not be until several months later at Lime Rock Raceway in CT that Chevrolet would race with the new design spoiler taking 2nd place at this event. With this said, the COPO spoiler on this Camaro is very fitting to this car's history! Dan Steakley Chevrolet (to where this car was delivered new by GM in 1970) and the Steakley Brothers who owned a series of Chevrolet dealerships in the Dallas Texas and surroundingareas sponsored some very known special race cars from the red 1967 Z/28 RS now listed in the national Z/28 registry as car #184 of the 602 produced in 1967to many other special late 1960's and early 1970s muscle cars the Steakley Brothers were involved with. The Dan Steakley dealership has a reputation for not only racing and racing sponsorship but taking delivery of some very special Camaros such as one of the two 1969 ZL1 Camaros delivered to Texas in 1969 of the only 69 produced.
The car is painted to the original color Daytona Yellow w/ black vinyl top just as it was built by GM as substantiated by its trim tag. Still retains what is believed to be factory original headliner, seat belts, 1970 dated fuel tank, factory steering wheel, factory original Hurst shifter in additional to its original sheet metal. "WB" original ink stamping still present/legible on the factory GM assembled and VIN stamped Muncie M20 transmission, along with factory drive shaft striping still present and legible. The fuel tank was removed in the beginning of 2019 and a partial build sheet was found substantiatingthis car to be a true 12 bolt dual option SS RS car. Certain significant RPO Codes can still be made out on the partial build sheet which appear as RPOs: C24 ( RS/Rally Sport specific option, i.e hide-away windshieldwipers) F41 (special high performance suspension front and rear) G80 (Posi rear axle/limited slip). There is also an RPO visible on the partial build-sheet/tank sticker that appears to be G96. This camaro also has RPO D35 mirror option that includes dual bullet mirrors with remote driver's mirror. This Camaro also has power brakes and appears was originallyequipped with a center console according to the buildsheet.
The car was assembled in April of 1970 by GM as verified by both the trim tag (which I am highly confident has never been off the car) and GM/NCRS records. Presently here in August 2019 the engine block and many other engine parts, transmission, and rear axle are all date coded within a few weeks to not more than 3 months preceding the official production date of the car, as they should be. The car was just completely repainted here in 2019 in correct code 51 Daytona Yellow, and received a new black vinyl top just as it was born from GM in 1970. The car retains all GM 1970 vinyl top and window glass trim, none of it is reproduction. The trim tag decodes this car was originallyDaytona Yellow and that it was born with a black Vinyl top.
The L78 solid lifter engine received boring .030 over from a virgin standard bore along with torque plate honing of the cylinders in a Sunnen automatic hone and final finish honing with Sunnen JHU818 ultra fine stones to suit the plasma moly ring set that was used in the assembly of the engine. The engine assembly is just being completed here in August of 2019. The engine received a correct regrind of the origional GM L78 camshaft and new solid mechancial lifters. New TRW style Seal power .030 over pistons with correct 11.0:1 closed chamber domes were used along with true double roller timing chain set, new high performance bi -metal bearings, and new moly rings as already mentioned. The engine was machined, balanced, and assembled by an engine builder with more than 25 years experience! The correct #6223 forged crankshaft was freshly turned and micro polished, along with being digitally balanced on a Winona Van Norman digital balance machine. The correct "dimpled" forged correcting rods were balanced within 2 grams of each other and the correct long slot "L" rocker arms were used. The oil pan is a true GM L78 Camaro oil pan, not a reproduction as is the 1970 dated GM timing cover for the 8" special high performance harmonic balancer. Attention to detail was observed during final assembly of this engine from the correct "A" marking intake bolts for the 1970 date coded Winters GM #569 L78 intake manifold to the correct #660 water neck with the correct "TR" marking water neck bolts, etc! The L78 engine is equippedwith all three of the special high performance deep groove pulleys!
