Details
I purchased this car from the original owner 7 years ago. It has 172,525 miles on the chassis. It’s been garage kept most of its life, and has always been well looked after. I have a copy of the original title to document ownership chain, and I know the previous owner’s son. He worked at the local Chevrolet dealership and facilitated the rebuild of the engine and transmission for his father. Both engine and trans have been rebuilt once and were R&R-ed at the dealership.
The engine runs fantastic. It pulls really strong and runs cool. It was rebuilt at approximately 127K and received hardened seats and a very mild RV cam. The engine starts easily, has a nice idle, and the choke kicks off as it should with a blip of the pedal. The transmission is excellent, it shifts exceptionally well and was rebuilt at approximately 135K. The 350V8 still has the original two-barrel carb, single exhaust, smog equipment, points ignition, and no headers! The electrical system is in good condition and has not been butchered, however there is a burned out bulb near the speedo and the horn button has been relocated to the dash.The engine bay has fortunately been spared the typical sloppy spray-can detailing. In the 7 years I’ve owned the car, all I’ve done is replace the upper control-arm bushings and ball joints, rebuild the carb, perform routine maintenance, and install a new battery – that’s it. It’s been a great practical classic, and very useful for occasional light hauling.
Body and Interior
This is a solid California car with a super straight body. There is no missing trim, and all the trim is original to the car and in excellent condition. There are no “extra” screws holding it on – only trim clips. All the body panels, bumpers, grill and trim are original to the car. Straight core support, no patch panels.
The car was repainted a long time ago, and shows some maturity. There are sun- kissed areas, chips and scratches, and there is an area on the hood where it was touched up and it does not match very well.However, the way it’s aged has just made it look better. It has a cool authentic vibe that’s hard to replicate. You can call it patina … my friends call it bitchin’.
The beautiful shade of dark green contrasts nicely with the wood-grain tailgate trim, black Cali plates, and weathered WWII P.O.W. decal on the windshield. The plastic lenses are all original and evenly faded. I have a complete replacement set, but the nicely worn original stuff just looks cool.
The floor is solid and the bed is not banged up. The original chrome trim around the bed has a few dings. The hood, door, tailgate, windows and vent wings all work nicely. The rear window channel area looks like it was cleaned up last time it was painted and still looks good. The bed was protected by a camper shell for many years. This El Camino has been preserved in one of the finest climates on earth. It has only lived in two zip codes: 92119 & 91941.
Interior
The interior features bucket seats with green fabric inserts. They have settled in a bit, and are super comfortable. It also has the aforementioned Buick GS steering wheel. I think the Buick horn-button fits the character of the car better than the Chevy version. Carpet has been replaced, headliner is original and nice, and so are the original door panels. Dash pad has a crack by the speaker grill on the passenger side and has a nice fitted cover. I believe the windshield is original to the car as it has the built-in antenna. There are some small chips and some vintage decals which make it worth keeping. An aftermarket radio fits the original dash opening without modification. Heater core has been bypassed. Vent-wing cranks work great and the A/C blows cold.
Chassis
Stops great; disc brakes in the front. Upper control arm bushings and upper ball joints replaced. Bottom A-arm bushings squeak a bit. Exhaust is in good condition, tires approx. 50% left.
Other
Heater core is bypassed. A brand new heater core with correct hose clamps is included in sale. The bulb by the speedo is out, and the horn button (red) is on the dash. The gas gauge is off a bit and is empty at the ¼ mark. There is a label on the dash to remind you. The carb has a flat spot off-idle when cold that's not as noticeable when it warms up. It's carb related and I'm used to it, so it does not present a problem for me. Lower A-arms squeak a bit. Mechanical temp gauge not working.

I am not recommending you do this of course because the car is 48 years old. I would drive it to LA without hesitation. The El Camino has freeway gears and just purrs at 75, and stays in its lane with two fingers on the wheel. Car is located in La Mesa, California 91941.

I purchased the car in Feb of 2012 with 169,629 miles. I would love to keep it, but I have my eye on something else.
