Description

Quoted from our seller " In its 50 year history, this car has traveled just over 32,000 miles. Purchased new by a lady in her sixties as her first and only car, it was used sparingly for about 18 years, then parked in her garage with only 17,000 miles on the odometer. The second, and current, owner had known of the car for 14 years, never having seen it on the road, or even out of the garage, before being able to purchase it in 1993. It needed the usual things that a car does after awakening from a long sleep–battery, tune-up, fresh gas… Over the years it has had numerous items maintained or replaced as necessary (it is, after all, a 50-year-old car and things do wear out), but is essentially an original car, including 99 percent original paint (only touch-ups have been done). As a Michigan car, it is in remarkable condition, likely owing to the fact that it was always garaged, was never driven in the harsh winter conditions and, as a result, is virtually rust-free (only a small bit of surface rust, nothing that would compromise any structural integrity). It does have a few small dents and dings, but that just makes one comfortable driving the car without the worries that perfect condition, show car quality, owners often experience. It is a sparsely equipped car, coming with only a few options: Powerglide automatic transmission operated via a lever on the dash, tinted windshield, and a spare tire lock. Original standard equipment on the Monza included carpet, two speed wipers, a heater, lighter, backup lights, and a locking glovebox. While it has no air conditioning, or even a radio, it is easy and fun to drive, and we don’t really miss either of those. A twin 12 volt socket has been added for modern day electronic devices. Corvair correct wire wheel covers have been added and dress it up nicely. The car has five proper size (P185/80R13) nearly new radial tires with about 7,000 miles on four of them, all mounted and balanced in April 2012. Oh, yeah, remember how eventually all Corvairs leak something (oil or transmission fluid, maybe both)? Well, this one drips almost nothing! The car was thoroughly gone through in 2013 by a 40+ year Corvair specific mechanic who brought several items–brakes, wheel and axle bearings, transmission, plugs, points, wires–up to current standards of maintenance, replacing items only as needed. The period correct front seat belts had been installed many years ago, and the rear ones recently added make it possible to take grandchildren (or small/short adults) for ice cream rides safely. The mechanic (I believe that the term today is “automobile technician“)–a true professional at his craft–proclaimed the car as “one of the nicest driving early Corvairs I’ve ever driven” and deemed it fit for confident long distance travel. Another such experienced technician said, “It is a JOY to drive—very tight for a 50-year-old Corvair.” The Corvair completed a two-week-long, 5,300 mile journey in May 2013. The trip began in Michigan, then upon arrival in downtown Chicago at the official start of Route 66, began in earnest that venture along the entire route, finishing at the official end on the Santa Monica pier, then returned home to Michigan via another route. The car performed flawlessly, with zero mechanical or performance issues, only needing one fan belt tightening, using a total of three quarts of oil and averaging nearly 30 miles per gallon–rather spectacular behavior for a 50-year-old car and half-century-old technology."
