21-Years-Owned 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS 396/325 4-Speed
Description
This is my 21 year owned 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS is finished in Corvette Bronze over a black interior .This beauty is equipped with a 396ci L35 V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a Positraction rear end. The car was gifted to the me by actor Charlie Sheen in 1998, and it was treated to a subsequent refurbishment including a gorgeous repaint, partial interior refresh, updates to the suspension, and rebuilds of the engine and transmission. Recent service has included new ignition components, a carburetor rebuild, and a tuneup. This Camaro SS is now offered with service manuals and a clean California title in the my name. The body has been refinished in Corvette Bronze (OO) utilizing a solvent-based PPG finish and accented with black nose stripes. The base of the doors and the rear glass drain channels were cut out and replaced with new metal during the refurbishment. Exterior features include front and rear spoilers, SS hood trim and badges, and chrome wheel-arch trim. Caveat, the new weatherstripping installed the the driver’s side door is too large and affects the flush closure of the door as shown in the photos.
15″ Rallye wheels retain chrome rings and hub covers and are wrapped in a set of redline tires. Suspension updates include new shocks, springs, tie rods, upper control arms, ball joints and bushings.
The standard black interior has been refreshed with new carpeting, headliner, and a rear parcel shelf.. Materials and finishes are shown up close in the photo gallery below. The five-digit odometer shows 33k miles and has rolled over. I have added approximately 30k miles since 1998.
The Fisher body tag is decoded below:
- 04C– Built during the third week of April
- 68-12437– 1968 Camaro coupe
- LOS35872– Los Angeles (Van Nuys), California factory; serial-number sequence
- 712– Black interior trim with standard bucket seats
- OO– Corvette Bronze exterior
The 325-horsepower 396ci V8 was rebuilt at Grayson’s Auto Service in North Carolina not long after the my acquisition of the car, and the Muncie four-speed manual transmission also was rebuilt. A pair of Hooker headers route exhaust through 3″ piping and Flowmaster mufflers, and the original California legal exhaust manifolds are included in the sale. A Positraction rear end is equipped. Work completed within the past two years included a rebuild of the Holley Quadrajet–style carburetor, installation of an HEI ignition, and a tuneup.
Iwould just say that this car has 0 miles on the perfect pain, if you shipped ( covered of course ) to your hous, you would give it a few blips of gas and you would be smiling as that 396 came to lif, the 3” exhaust and flowmaster 40’s just sounds …./ right ….
the suspension is pretty much fully sorted with virtually no miles on shock, ball joint, control arm bushings ( all factory spec , brake, brake booste, trans is shifting well, although i did notice a little clatter getting into reverse the other da, (idle?) original heavy duty Harrison radiator has been recore, so it runs cool on the LA freeway stop and go .. note . i tried a few aftermarket radiators they were NOT even close to as robust as the orig so i mailed it out for recore which was quite expensive …,
lnew correct pile carpe, headline, older recovered standard seats ( did it myself circa 2002) in a nicer blacker vinyl than avail now .. dash pad is a 10 year old high quality repro … tic tac toc rebuilt by noho speedometer some years back i’ll have to double check that tach is still working .. Older Firestone Redline tires low miles but 15 years old approx … i used vintage cast alum valve covers because the stamped steel ones leak !
i’m sure there are more perks and upgrades i’m forgetting, but trying hard to think of it all …
the car is a tried and true CA car, so there is no frame rust that I or my body man has ever seen. What this car did have was the “classic” places these cars rust as a result of leaves clogging up the drainage channel, etc..Those places were never ba, but there was bubbling in the classic spot, which are under the door corners, and where the rear glass seal hits the trunk area. Those were cut out an replaced and massaged with metal. The rest of the body was very straight, although there was a nasty little bumper /body indent I did while backing out of Midas Muffler in Hollywood circa 2006! We fixed that, and primed and sanded primed and sanded until this body was just straight as could be. I then took the car too Simi Valley for the jambs and all respray, in Solvent based PPG. (Tough to find here) all in all I have $20,500 in the paint job. The car starts cranks idles and pulls very strong,. Lots of new odds and ends, I left it with a classic car mechanic a few months about 18 months ago who worked lots of small improvements, HEI (the car always had points all those years) Pertronix, brake. Work, new alternator as well. The car has always run VERY well and pulls VERY VERY hard it will snap your neck back in your seat. It’s gearing I think is more aggressive than stoc, although I have never opened the case.
I am selling the car to fund a very over budget remodel of my home . As far as anything “Wrong” that is not talked About in the actual auction, nothing comes to mind! I am a pretty responsible car nut and this car has been pampered for years, it has been the crown jewel in my meager collection, nowI have the Porsche 911 bug so this baby is finally moving on down the line. Celeb owned real deal custom color real SS 4 speed car, I’ve been in LA for 20 years and have NEVER seen another…
Happy Bidding, covered shipping only or pick up in LA. The car is for sale locally so I do reserve the right to sell locally if that were to come up, thanks for looking!
