Description

It's pretty easy to find vintage Chevrolet metal that's been modified, tweaked and morphed into anything from killer custom trophy winners to busted backyard travesties. But when it comes to how your classic Chevy feels, and how you feel driving it, nothing quite compares to the way these cars rolled off USA-1's legendary assembly lines. After all, GM's largest division didn't get that nickname, or its storied reputation, by producing subpar iron. And when it comes to some of the greatest muscle cars of all time, why fix what ain't broke? The beneficiary of a 2-year, $110K restoration, this stunning Chevelle convertible wraps a brutal L78/4-speed drivetrain in a striking black on red color combination. If you're in the market for a top-notch example of one of the best Chevrolets ever produced, we have your car!

During its thorough, ground-up rebuild, this solid old Chevy was entirely disassembled and completely striped of its dull, original pigment. Once that single-stage was removed, an incredibly straight fuselage was augmented with a bit of fresh sheetmetal. As that massaged sheetmetal featured better-than-factory alignment, a rich coat of Tuxedo Black base was accented with Garnet Red stripes and sealed in glossy clear. When that clear dried, many labor-intensive hours were spent wet-sanding a spectacular shine. And today, this top dog Super Sport sits as a spectacular piece of iconic American muscle that's detailed to better-than-new standards.

By 1969, Chevrolet's Chevelle had earned the tagline "America's most popular mid-size". And GM, knowing not to mess with a good thing, rang in the new model year with minimal aesthetic changes. At the front of this drop-top, a black-trimmed grille centers a fresh "SS396" emblem between bright headlights, clear parking lamps and a new chrome bumper. Behind that grille, an SS-exclusive hood props finned louvers between a flashy Chevelle header script and pristine greenhouse glass that's framed in straight stainless trim and a fresh black vinyl. At the sides of that hood, traditional door handles and chrome mirrors complement bold fender badges, dent-free wheel trim and small marker lamps. And at the back of the car, a correct valence centers clear tail lights and a prominent "SS396" emblem above a second chrome bumper and mirror-like exhaust tips.

Lift this A-Body's double-domed hood and you'll find a 396 cubic inch L78 big block. As one of the most powerful and memorable Chevrolet engines ever created, this cast iron mill utilizes square-port closed chamber heads, a steel crank and forged pistons to turn stout 11 to 1 compression into 375 horsepower and 415 lb./ft. of pavement melting torque. Oxygen and fuel enter the combustion chambers through a freshly decaled air cleaner, new stainless fluid lines and a big Holley carburetor. Below that carburetor, a sea of brilliant Chevy Orange paint covers the block from its correct aluminum intake all the way to its stamped steel oil pan. At the back of that intake, a traditional points distributor shoots spark through eight AC Delco Premium Wires. Below those wires, bright chrome valve covers reflect professionally restored exhaust manifolds. And in front of those valve covers, a fresh, Delco-topped battery rides next to a heavy duty radiator that's cinched to pliable hoses via familiar tower clamps. Aesthetically, this show worthy Chevelle's glossy Tuxedo paint flows seamlessly into a smooth, correctly marked engine bay. High quality extraneous bits, like new decals and a correct Delco Moraine brake booster, are present and accounted for. And if you think this description sounds good, just wait 'til you hear the engine run!

Under this impressive Chevelle you'll find a fully sorted chassis and super solid floorpans that, like the car's clean exterior panels and lust worthy engine, have been restored to very high standards. At the center of those floors, a tough Muncie 4-speed twists torque to a rebuilt GM 12-bolt that spins a posi-traction differential around pleasant, 3.31 gears. Holding that stellar drivetrain in place is a tagged F41 suspension which features modern power steering and correct power front disc and rear drum brakes. Exhaust flows through aluminized pipes to aggressive, dual-chamber mufflers and the aforementioned tips. Power flows to the pavement via classic Super Sport wheels and vintage looking 225/70R14 BF Goodrich Silvertown redlines. Items like a big stainless fuel tank, fresh stainless hardware and a factory parking brake ensure years of carefree cruising. And, in keeping with the 396 up top, much attention has been paid to making sure everything under this Chevelle is clean and ready for the red carpet!

Open this Chevy's solid doors and you'll find an attractive Medium Red interior that was installed during the car's extensive restoration. Centered in those new components is a trio of fresh bench and bucket seats that are fitted with high quality covers and bright stainless hardware. Below those seats, like-new carpet anchors a traditional Muncie shifter inside a factory-correct console and thick, rubber floor mats. At the edge of that carpet, fresh, fade-free side panels give the cockpit much needed visual pop. In front of the driver, a standard, "SS" branded steering wheel spins around a warp-free dash and optional deluxe gauges. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk sandwiches a fully covered spare between a new mat, a new jack and correct decklid decals.

This convertible's sale includes a vintage Owner's Manual.
