Description

1989 Chevrolet C30 Dually
Up for auction here is a 1989 Chevrolet C30 that is in great shape. This is one of the cleanest square body pickups that I have run across that wasn’t a full blown show truck. When this truck was built it was meant to still function as a tow rig, and not just look good. You could pull with this everyday if you needed, or just load up the family and head out for a long road trip.
I’ll start out first with the powertrain of the truck. This does have the big block 454 and it will pull anything you can throw at it. This is the fuel injected version with throttle body injection. The engine is all stock with the exception of long tube headers and true dual exhaust. Under the hood you can hardly tell the engine is running it’s so quiet. Out back the exhaust has a nice deep tone while not being too loud. There is no drone inside and it’s very tame at idle and cruising, and then really wakes up when you get into it. The engine has always been regularly maintained, with some new AC Delco parts installed. It just had a tune up, along with new belts and ac compressor. The ac was retrofitted to run on R134a and had a new seals replaced in the lines. The transmission is an automatic turbo 400. It was rebuilt about 20k miles ago by a reputable transmission shop and had a shift kit installed. It runs and drives perfectly and I wouldn’t hesitate to jump in it right now and head across country in it. We recently just took it on a 10 hour round trip up to Wisconsin and didn’t have any issues. The truck has been lowered 3/4 with spindles up front, shackles and hangers in the rear. Doing it this way did not alter the ride quality or suspension travel at all. We also left the overload springs in the rear so it still has the same towing capacity as it did stock. The wheels have been upgraded to 22” Mayhem chrome wheels with 265/40R22 tires. The tires have an extra load rating and perform really well while towing. There is actually quite a bit of sidewall to these tires so the ride is not as bad as you would expect it to be. The nice thing about this setup is that it’s a direct bolt on 8 lug wheel. So this means no 10 lug adapters to mess with and the stock spare tire can still be used. The new tire height is the exact same as the old wheels and tires so the speedo did not change and the spare tire is also the same. The lowering kit, wheels and tires all have less than 1000 miles on them and still look brand new. When we put the spindles up front we put all new bearings in and checked the brakes which look almost new. To get the rear wheels to fit we had to put in longer wheel studs. This axle is a full floater so we had to remove the axles to do this. We went ahead and put new bearing and seals in the rear also since we were already there. Mechanically the truck is sound and doesn’t need anything.
The exterior looks just as good in person as it does in the pictures. The truck underwent a frame on restoration almost 3 years ago and still looks just as good today as it did then. This was a professional paint job and was done correctly. All the old paint was stripped off down to bare metal. Epoxy primer and basecoat/clearcoat was then sprayed on. The paint job looks very good and was wet sanded and buffed until all the orange peel was gone. There are a few tiny rock chips in the front that have been touched up, but any vehicle that gets driven as much as this one will have that. It’s very solid with no rust anywhere. This has been a southern truck most of its life so all the sheet metal is factory. It has all the factory spot welds on the rockers, and the original seam sealer on the inside of the doors to prove it. The whole bottom side was also undercoated to prevent any rust in the future. This does not get driven in the winter when there is salt out on the roads. The rear dually fenders were just modified to fit the new wheels and tires. They were professionally widened 2 ½” and look fantastic. We have a special way of doing these where we were able to retain the stock look and shape. Most people are not aware that they are widened but I believe it gives the truck a much more proportional look. The fenders were then painted and buffed to match the rest of the truck. All of the lighting, bumpers, and grill were replaced when it was painted and are still in excellent shape. The windows were just tinted 35% which gives it a nice classy look while not being too dark. The rear window is an aftermarket sliding unit that works great. There is also a roll up bed cover that has been installed. On the inside there is a bed mat, and underneath it is very clean with no rust. Also included in the sale is a stainless tailgate cover, bug shield, and mud flaps. These were on the truck when we got it and I didn’t think they went with the style we were going for. All of this stuff can be easily bolted back on if you wish.
The interior is very clean as well. I’m usually not a very big fan of red interiors but this one I am in love with. It’s a perfect contrast with the black and chrome. Everything inside is in good shape with very minimal wear. The dash pad has been replaced since it had a crack in it from the sun, but other than that the rest is factory. It does have every option I believe you could get for these trucks back in the day. It has power locks, power windows, tilt, cruise, ac and intermittent wipers. It also has the dual fuel tanks with the switch on the dash. These works great and come in very useful when on a long trip. The factory radio has been replaced with a newer unit that has radio, cd, and aux. All of the speakers have been upgraded and they are all powered by an amplifier under the rear seat. Also included in the sale is a custom subwoofer box that was made to go between the front and rear seat. All it needs to work again is the speaker wires hooked up to the amplifier that is already ran. I removed this since we needed the seating capacity but it sounded good when it was in there. A transmission temperature gauge was installed under the dash to keep an eye on that since it’s used for towing. There is also a cup holder that installs in the ash tray slot that will be included. Everything inside works and performs as it should.
Overall this is just a great running a driving truck that needs absolutely nothing but a new owner. There has been over $8k in upgrades recently with the wheels, tires, lowering kit, and widening of the rear fenders. You will not be disappointed in this truck at all. I have tried to describe the truck to the best of my ability but I’m sure there is some things I have left out.
