1977 Datsun 280z Fully Restored 4 Speed 2.8L Original
Description
Up for sale is my 1977 Datsun 280z. I've owned it for about 4 years, and have done a full restoration on it. The car was an Arizona car for most of it's life, garage kept. Restoration has been done for about a year and a half. The car has a lot of new parts, but was kept mostly original. This is not a shoddy restoration, it was done with care and with the intention of keeping it, not selling it. I am selling it because it sees more garage time than road time. I want someone else to enjoy it like I can't. I have a book of receipts and photos from the restoration, and receipts from much farther back.
Outside: Paint job was done professionally. The paint was taken entirely down to bare metal. I have pictures of it disassembled (if interested). There was very very little rust, all holes were patched properly, not bondo'd. Underside was coated with truck bedliner. Wheels are from a later 280zx, but fit very well. Tires are new, probably have less than 2000 miles on them. Front air dam is an older MSA style, painted black with a matte clear. The inner grill is all custom made. Rear spoiler is new from MSA, same black with matte clear. As far as I'm aware all glass is original, new seals and weather stripping was installed all around. Headlights are 7" round bulbs, with halo's (sync'd to turn signals). New light bulbs in the rear, and all housings repainted. There is a sunroof, but it was installed well and correctly. The roof has been reinforced on the inside. Has not seen rain since it has been restored, but does have new wipers. The car is coated with nano-coating (thin glass). It was coated about 6 months ago, and I will include several more bottles incase you want to coat it again. This coating protects the paint against chips and keeps paint looking nice.
Motor/Trans: Motor is all original, 4 speed trans, original diff. Lots of new parts on the motor. All new sensor clips. New cold start injector, new hoses, new coil, new spark plugs, new wires, etc. Almost everything under the hood is refurbished or new. Engine was disassembled down to the head, new gaskets (intake/exhaust, valve cover), motor painted as well (non-professional, but looks pretty good from 5ft). The inner motor well is painted with truck bedliner as well. Trans and clutch haven't been serviced. I was waiting on the clutch to go out to replace it with a 5 speed, but the clutch is still strong, so I haven't worried about it. Never had even the first slip or problem with the transmission or clutch. Rear diff is the same way. Fluid could probably use a change. If it doesn't sell soon, I will be changing all the fluid in the transmission and diff, along with engine oil.
Brakes/Suspension: Brakes are entirely new. New rotors, pads, and brake calipers in the front. In the rear there is new drums, springs, shoes, etc. The brakes are decent for a 40 year old sports car, but nothing spectacular. Suspension is original, but doesn't have any problems. Doesn't float, drives like it should.
Inside: Very original. Carpet is older, but was taken out and fully cleaned. During the restoration process while the carpet was out, everything was taken out and cleaned. The floor was sprayed with rubber coating to keep water out, then covered with sound deadening (fatmat). Dash is cracked, but was filled and smoothed to look better. There is a mat over it now. Steering wheel and gauges are all original and working (Gauges have white faces, they're stickers and a few are staring to peel). Clock is the only one that doesn't work. Radio has been replaced with a modern unit with bluetooth. 4 inch speakers installed in the doors, 6x9's in the rear. There is holes in the door cards for tweeters, but I haven't found a pair to fit yet (they have to be very shallow). Headliner was redone with the MSA kit, and Vinyl. It looks very good. Seats have genuine leather covers. The entire seats were removed, cleaned and redone. They have new foam, and covers installed. As far as I'm aware there are no missing panels or parts. Inner gauge lights are all blue LED's.
The car is in very good shape. There is a couple of small things wrong with it, but overall it can easily win 1st place as local (maybe regional) car shows.
Things that are wrong:* There is a couple of spots on the paint (by the windshield on the cowl there is a spot that has been repainted, noticeable up close). There is a small dent on the drivers door. You have to be looking at the perfect angle in the light to see it. I will need to take pictures of these spots when I am in the garage again.* Missing tweeters, can be cheaply fixed but I was looking for a proper fix. The electrical is all already installed just waiting for speakers.* Runs like a 40 year old car. The car has been gone through, starts up on the 1st or 2nd spin of the engine every time. I would trust this car to drive to California today. I wouldn't say it's something "wrong" but wanted to add that it isn't a new car. Although it does have fuel injection, it doesn't run quite like a new car.* Gauge stickers are starting to peel on a couple of them. Hardly noticeable, and an easy fix.
This is an absolute beauty of a car. If you have any questions, or want more pictures of anything, don't hesitate to contact me. I will assist with shipping, or I can help transport within reason. The car is located in Indiana. I am in absolutely no rush to sell. I would not be upset to keep it in my garage and drive it on sunny days. I will accept trades (partial and full). These cars are going up in value every day (Hagerty says these cars have gone up roughly 24% over the past 3 years). This is your chance to get one before the prices get through the roof. Payment must be made in cash (no checks), $1000 non-refundable deposit paid through PayPal at time of purchase.
I will entertain all trades, but here are some of the main things I'm interested in:Older TeslaAnother Datsun 240/260/280 in worse condition + cash (One I don't feel bad driving)Would entertain a sub 10k gas saver +cash (like accord, civic, maxima, no fords)R32 GTR
Trades should be in the same ballpark value as my car. I can add or take cash.
