Description

While the name "Edsel" carries some heavy baggage today, the truth is that these were always great cars and today they're finally starting to get the respect that they deserve. Perhaps the design has aged better than most, or perhaps it's the very notoriety that gave them their reputation that makes them so highly sought today. Either way, this 1958 Edsel Citation sedan is a great example of the breed with a cool '50s look that will always attract attention.Truly, there's no mistaking an Edsel for anything else, but looking at it from today's perspective, you're faced by a handsome '50s cruiser with a crisp two-tone paint scheme. Of course, it doesn't hurt that someone has been taking care of this car for decades, and the result is an affordable '50s cruiser that has the right look. The four-door hardtop body cleverly disguises its family car origins and cuts a sleek profile, and the wedge of white framed by bright stainless trim gives it the look of always being in motion. Paint and bodywork are pretty good, not finished to show standards but attractive and the color combination is as fashionable today as it was in 1958. The finish shines up well, the fit and finish are excellent, and this car might make you fall in love with an Edsel even against your will. All of the chrome shows rather well, including the trademark Edsel grille and massive wrap-around bumpers fore and aft. If you want to make an entrance, this car does it in a big way.Inside, the interior appears to be mostly original. Legroom is expansive, and with the hardtop body style, it's bright and airy inside. The copper and white upholstery is in surprisingly good shape, and features metallic details that add a lot of interest in that uniquely '50s way. The pushbutton automatic in the center of the steering wheel is fully operational, the gauges were clearly inspired by the jet-age, and it carries options like a power front seat and AM radio, although it might be due for an update in the entertainment department. Seat belts have been added in the name of safety and there are rubber floor mats to help keep the carpets looking their best. The trunk is truly massive, and includes a full-sized spare tire that's never been used, as well as a jack assembly. The Edsel also got a mighty 410 cubic inch V8 whose torque rating of 475 foot-pounds is proudly worn on the valve covers. The engine bay is largely original, and by the looks of things, it wouldn't be surprising to learn that the mileage shown is authentic. There are signs of regular maintenance, and this engine has a reputation as one of Ford's better designs, with great torque and the reliability of an anvil. It has been recently tuned, the radiator, hoses, and thermostat are new, and it runs superbly, pulling the big sedan down the road effortlessly at 75 MPH. It also includes power steering and power brakes, so it's a pleasure to drive, and the freshly rebuilt automatic transmission shifts as it should. Out back, a heavy-duty Ford 9-inch rear end carries highway-friendly gears and hangs on fresh shocks, while the exhaust system features a new muffler. 215/75/14 whitewall radials with factory hubcaps finish off this awesome '50s legend.Big performance, lots of room, and a familiar name, this is a very affordable way to own an icon for not a lot of cash. Forget the past, when you drive an Edsel, you won't want anything else. Call today!
