International Harvester: Scout II 1964 with Extras - Runs
Description
Overview: This truck is remarkably stock. As far as I know its been barn kept most of its life. It was freshened up around 2001 but remained inside a barn for 6 years (2007). It was bought and left untouched for 4 years and resold around 2011. The new owners had it for 2.5 years and only managed to touch the fuel line. I bought it in 2013 and have invested roughly $2,000 and countless hours looking for parts.
When I bought the Scout, we didn't know my wife had just become pregnant. We had our son, I had shoulder surgery and next thing I knew I'd been sitting on the truck for a few years with no progress made. The last thing I want is for it to just rust away in my backyard until one day no one can enjoy the thing.
Motor: 152ci 4-cyl
Runs and is drivable. IH 152 weighs 2lbs less than a chevy 350 and from what I have read about them are pretty solid due to how much metal they invested in the block. Rebuilt carburetor with holley rebuild kit. Some smoking on start up from the exhaust manifold, but goes away after its been running for a few minutes. Not much power, but nice to putt around town. Loads of room under the hood for a motor swap.
Transmission: Stock 3 speed. I replaced slave cylinder and transmission fluid.
Rear Axle: Replaced gasket, fluid, and cleaned.
Brakes: Replaced all break line, brake cylinders, and brake shoes. Still has single reservoir master cylinder. Also have the rotor removal tool for the rear wheels. $110 tool.
Tires: New, never been on the road. I paid roughly $550 for the four, mounted and balanced. I move the truck around the yard every few months.
Body: When I got the truck it had a bright red "shade tree" paint job done to it. I wanted to see what they were trying to cover up and stared stripping down the paint. I found the body was extremely solid. I've seen some bondo nightmares hidden under re-sale red paint, but the truck is very straight. The black paint I used was Bright Touch BP50. I just wanted one solid color as I tinkered on it.
Rust:
Cab floor. Used fiberglass to patch the main rot spots. Idea was to coat the floor in bedliner when done. Rusted out where the body meets the floor next to clutch pedal. Punched a hole through what I could with a screw driver. Really wanted to see where the issues were.
Doors. On the drivers-side there's a hole near the bottom. On the passenger-side the bottom of the door is rusted out. Everything can be repaired with some sheet metal. Nothing shows on the exterior when the doors are closed.
Body. Some bubbling and rust infront of and behind the driver-side door.
Tailgate. The bottom of the tailgate is starting to bubble.
Exhaust. Its not great. Some exhaust gets in the cab.
Additions:
Steering Wheel: Grant. Biggest one I could find. The original one was cracked and had been drilled out more than once. Fixed the turn signals while I was in the steering wheel. No Horn
Fuel Filter: The fuel line needs a redo. The previous owners made a very slap dash addition to the fuel system. Not proud of it, but never got around to fixing it.
Alternator: The Scout has been converted to alternator but the positive/negative cables are still original, so they're backwards.
Cassette Player: No clue. The clock comes on. Had to take it out to replace a fuse.
License Plate Light: Replaced the fixture.
Known Issues:
Plastic Spacer for head lamp sprung out and got lost. Can easily fabricate another one. Just a little piece of plastic.
No heater core and it has been bypassed. Heat pipe running to the vents is dry rotted and needs to be replaced.
Fuel filter placement is just hanging out under the hood. Needs to be changed. But it works.
Wipers need to be converter to electric. Had the old vacuum ones on it and they were toast. Bought two new marine wiper motors as suggested on the forums. $110 each. Was in the middle of mounting them before my shoulder surgery and that's when I called it quits on the truck.
Missing Bolts here and there. Nothing uncommon.
