The Jaguar XK6 essentially carried over the drivetrain of the iconic E-Type, released in 1961. As a comfortable saloon with a pedigree heritage, the XJ6 quickly became a popular executive transport.Notnecessarily a swift car, the heavy four-door sped along smoothly and quietly up to a stated 120mph, and could handle itself in the bends with relative ease. The (now Bosch injected) 4.2L inline six of XKE fame was producing 202bhp and spun 231lb/ft of torque through a BW 3-speed automatic to an optional limited slip rear differential, meeting the road on the factory supplied Perilli P5 radial tires. Although theSeries-Imodels were plagued with build and reliability problems (due to a volatile labor environment in the UK at the time), by 1979, when the Series-III debuted, the XJ6 was regarded as a crowningjewelof Jaguar development and considered to be the final achievement of Sir William Lyons.

The XJ6 was superbly outfitted by any standard - and while the price tag when new may have shocked some, the list of standard features was a definitive justification of the initial set-back. For one's convenience, Jaguar included atelescoping steering column; power sunroof, windows, mirrors and antenna. Safety items were covered by a central locking system, power assisted four wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, 3-point safety belts and an enlarged "pillarless" greenhouse of glass for superior visibility. Comfort, however, was the clear modus operandi for Jaguar and the list on the XK6 goes something like this: automatic climate control with separate rear seat controls; a four-speaker AM/FM cassette stereo; deep pile carpeting, cruise control and trip computer, heavy sound deadening material and a comprehensive tool kit. The Vanden Plas (as seen here) offered up even more, with hand-stitched Connolly leather interior (including door panels and the center console), a burled Walnut dash and door trim, and nylon "fur" throw rugs. The rear passengers were treated to a storage compartment in the added center arm rest, individually sculpted rear seats and swiveling reading lights for both.

By 1986, the body had improved significantly as well. A heavily braced monocoque platform was now being treated with corrosion protection in amulti-step process including wax injection into the various cavities underneath and comprehensive seam-sealing, all finished off with four coats ofthermo-plastic acrylic paint. A minor redesign, completed by the coachbuilder Pininfarina of Italy, sculpted the body into its final -and beautiful- iteration as seen here. Even the disturbing DOT bumpers managed to be well interpreted with a decorative cap that somehow manages to obscure their heft.

This remarkably preserved XJ was discovered beneath the dust of 20 year's storage in a dry barn in rural Wyoming.Delivered to Overseas Motors of Dallas, Texas, the car was first sold on 6/18/1986 to a Dallas resident.Soldagain in June of 1993byStevinson Imports of Denver (a long-standing luxury dealer), the mileage at sale was reported as 46,275, making its current 52k almost undoubtedly correct. Unfortunately, the tools no longer accompanied the car and records don't precede the 1993 sale. It is believed to be a two-owner car from new.

Corroborating the mileage is theimmaculateoriginal Vanden Plas interior. With no crackingofthe dash, wood or seats, the interior is near new in condition with leatherhidesthat remain plush and remarkably clean, and a headliner in perfect lamination with the car's roof. The exterior shows only small blemishes as would be seen on any original paint of a 31yr vintage - a bright shine allows the keen eye an undeniable interpretation of the clean factory lines in the body, and exemplary fit of all panels. The wheels have clearly never seen a curb and remain free of unsightly nicks or stains. The hood pulls back to reveal a stunning original engine compartment and thetrunk compartment exudes the same. The chassis proudly displays a life in the dry and the car presents as rust free and very solid.

After a 20 year respite from the road, this car is currently not running and will require a full service and fresh tires before a registration is in order. Ask us about providing these services for you.
