Description

Where to begin?? A fellow enthusiast found this Range Rover sitting, and put me in touch with it's owner of the last 7 or so years. She was not running, but a very solid example with no rust- which is very difficult to find!I got the old girl home, installed a new fuel pump and fuel filter, new battery, and she fired first time!! Further inspection revealed new plugs and wires, fresh transmission fluid, fresh engine oil- all in all, a very well cared for example. However, the rear hatch -while rust free and appears to be original, would not open as the handle button would not depress. New handle, no more issue!! We did find minimal surface rust on the floor under the rear carpet- apparently from the hatch not being latched. The rust was sanded and covered with POR15, and the carpet dried out. No further leaking has occurred since the latch has been replaced.Someone had already replaced the air suspension with coils, but we replaced the coils with a +2" lift, as the new tires were going to be a size larger (new BFG A/T-IIs in 245/75-16 fitted), while retaining the Bilstein shocks -after correcting the mounts for proper fitment. The brakes also had been fitted with traditional vacuum assist, deleting the expensive ABS block (aprox an $1800 part!!), and were in great shape. So we began driving her regularly...Well, my wife and I are about a foot difference in height, and the electric seats were intermittent at best. So, a full set of earlier Hunter manual seats were found, purchased and fitted- problem solved once again! And to go with the new seats, a new headliner was installed- looking good now, especially with the new ceiling light lenses! If you have never driven one of these Classics, they are a hoot and a half! The only issue now was the transmission would 'hunt' a bit (up and down shift a time or two) when driven at about 40 mph, due to the bigger tire size. We elected to live with it as that is an unusual speed to maintain, and at any other speed, no issue. I suppose the orig tire size could be refitted if it becomes an issue for the new owner. Also, with the brakes converted to a traditional system, the ABS, brake, and traction control indicators remain lit. There is noise from one of the catalytic convertors- a rattle- which is pretty common, and obvious primarily at idle. The good news is there is no check engine light on, which is fantastic! Lastly, the rear right bumper end cap is off (looks like previous owner may have tapped right rear corner of the bumper), but I have found one- just not yet installed. The vehicle is driven regularly, so miles will likely vary. My wife has gotten an LR3, as we need the third row seat, and I am not likely to give up my Defender, so the Classic is excess to our needs, and hence the sale. Please note: The last picture shows a nice original dash with wood accent I have located. It is NOT included as part of this auction, but is available to the winner for an additional $500 for the part only- no installation!! If the winning bidder is not interested, I will list it for sale separately.
Perception of condition varies from person to person- especially on a 24 yo English luxury SUV! So, prebid inspection is strongly encouraged! However, should you elect to waive this option, your bid is placed to buy, not inspect the vehicle. Please be respectful, and only bid if you have funds available, wife's approval, dog's approval, kids approval- whomever's approval is needed PRIOR to bidding.
Lastly, being a 24 yo English vehicle, there is no warranty expressed or implied- nor should same be even remotely expected!! The vehicle is driven with current NC registration, tags and insurance- showing appropriate inspections/regulations/fees have been met. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at your convenience.
Thanks for looking, and best of luck bidding!!
