Description

The story behind this car is:
I purchased from a dealer on EBay in 2012. I spoke with the guy selling the car and he told me that it was a good, solid old Benz that would need only minor work to be a daily driver. I won the auction and had the car shipped to from Washington state to Michigan. Unfortunately, the dealer had hidden the fact that the car barely ran and by that time I had spent a fortune having it shipped to me.
I have spent a lot of time and money figuring out why the vehicle ran so poorly. Things I have done/replaced:
Injection pump - rebuilt unit
Injectors rebuilt and pop-tested - bosio nozzles
Adjusted modulator and control pressure on transmission
Repaired wire for first gear kick down and replaced fuse
Replaced old series style glow plugs with parallel pencil style
Replaced old, stretched timing chain with new one
Adjusted valves
These repairs have a made a world of difference. The car can actually be started in cold weather now!
Other new parts include:
rebuilt starter
Front brakes - calipers, rotors, and soft lines
Resealed power steering pump and installed new bearings and fresh fluid and filter
Power steering pressure line and return lines
Fuel tank strainer, suction line, and return line
Fuel lift pump
fuel filters - prefilter and main filter
Thermostat and hose near thermostat
Drivers side engine mount
There's probably a bunch of other stuff that I've replaced, that I can't think of right now.
The car is in pretty good shape for being almost 40 years old. It spent almost all of its life in the Pacific Northwest
where they do not salt the roads. Since it's been in Michigan it has not been exposed to road salt. There is non of the typical rot that you would find on the vehicle from the Midwest.
There are a couple spots of rust however...
-Lower drivers door is bubbling. The weather seal between the glass and window is dry rotted and has allowed rain water to enter the door. Good doors are plentiful on EBay.
-Area under battery. I replaced the battery tray when I got the car and wire-wheeled and treated the area with POR paint. This is a common thing with these cars.
- Front air dam. It appears that one of the previous owners had hit something and had the air dam repaired on-the-cheap.
There are pictures showing the damage. If you can do minor body work, it probably wouldn't take much to make like new.
If I were going to keep the car, I would replace the weather seals - doors, trunk etc. There is a vacuum leak somewhere in the body so I have plugs in the vacuum lines. Because of this, the power door and trunk locks do not work. The odometer does not work - very common on these car and easy to fix. Also the power sunroof is not working. I have no idea, about the air conditioning. One of the hoses was removed and is in the trunk. At the very least, it will need to be recharged.
