Mint 1975 Mercedes Benz 300D - CREAMPUFF! - Drive Anywhere
Description
This car is beautiful and really turns heads. It starts right up, runs and drives like a dream, floats down the highway like a big, luxury car but holds the curves like a Mercedes. I drove it to the shore last month (325 mi. round trip) and enjoyed every mile. Logged 28 mpg on the way down with the windows and sunroof open. On the return trip, it was really hot outside so I used the a/c and logged an even more impressive 30 mpg. I'm impressed with the fuel economy of this solid old car, but the real fun is just driving it, enjoying the ride, steering with one finger and waving back at people.
The exterior is in great shape. The chrome, rubber and aluminum trim is very straight and clean. The rubber bumper guards have a few cracks, but overall very decent. The weather stripping is excellent with the exception of the trunk, but still keeps the trunk dry. The paint with the exception of a couple of small dings, is very nice and has a real luster to it. I love waxing this car or touching it up with some Maguiar's and just rolling around town. People recognize me as "The guy with that beautiful old Mercedes." I've taken it to a couple of local Sunday cruise nights and the car guys love this classic old survivor.
So here's what I've been told of the history of this car. It was owned for most of its 41 years by the same family, until recently when it was time to start selling stuff. When the car was parked, it had about 69000 miles on it. Apparently, it sat for 20+ years, sheltered in a garage somewhere. It hasn't had much done to it except to replace all the original tires with their flat spots (all mfg'd in W. Germany), drain all the fuel and fluids, clean the tanks and reservoirs and replace the filters and vacuum lines and adjust the valves. In the interior, the horse hair has been replaced in the front seats and although the rear seats are still very comfortable, they could probably use it too.
A couple more things...The carpet is almost flawless and the dash and headliner very good. The headliner in the sunroof has an ancient cigarette burn.
Everything works except the clock, which looks like its trying to work. Probably loose hands. And the trip counter, which doesn't reset exactly to 000, so I don't use it. Although, it does click-off the miles accurately.
