This amazing Mercury represents an era of the American automobile when one could enjoy uncompromising design, engineering and true style! The sales literature for the model speaks of “the unusual luxury, power and pure beauty that is Park Lane”.And that unique, stylish and functional Breezeway window set Mercury apart from the rest and still does today!
Mercury offered several different variations of their full-size sedan, but the Park Lane model was the ultimate expression of the brand for ’64.
This particular Park Lane is spectacular example of the marque. Having undergone an extensive restoration by a prior owner, it was refinished in its correct - and rare - factory shade of Medium Turquoise Metallic – code 67. A boring name for an amazing color! The body is straight and the paint finish looks spectacular! The exterior chrome and stainless trim including the spinner wheel covers shine brightly.
The Park Lane interior is amazing to behold not only because of its color, but its condition as well.While the exterior of the car was restored, the interior appears to have been kept mostly original and looks as nice as it did the day the car left the factory.It is beautifully upholstered in color-coordinated, Turquoise fabric with vinyl accents. Front and rear seats and all four door panels are in terrific condition. The car is equipped with original period FOMOCO driver’s and front passenger seatbelts. The headliner and carpeting have been replaced using correct materials. The trunk is in superb condition as well having been restored using correct materials and has the original spare tire and jack.
The instrument panel is aircraft-inspired with a distinctive partial Lucite steering wheel and an array of dials and gauges that are arranged and finished like no other. All gauges work as they should including the fender-mounted direction signal indicators. The car is equipped with a rare factory air conditioning system that has been upgraded and converted to 134A. It works great keeping you nice and cool and comfy on those warm summer days.And when not in use, the dash-integrated AC vents retract until they are needed again. It is a pretty slick setup for a car from this period. The heater works just fine for those cooler days. We have just replaced the under-hood heater hoses with the correct white-stripe type. A working factory AM radio and antenna are installed. Of course this Mercury has power steering, power brakes, power front seat, power windows – and of course, that fabulous power “breezeway” rear window that can be raised and lowered with just a touch of the driver’s finger. All the power windows operate well. The front seat has a 6-way power adjustment that works fine. The key word here is “power”!
Under the hood is Mercury’s 390 cubic inch Marauder V-8 with a 4-barrel carburetor. It was rated at 300 horsepower and 427 lb. ft. of torque. It is equipped with a “Multi-Drive Merc-o-Matic” fully automatic 3-speed transmission. The car starts up and idles nicely. The transmission shifts smoothly without hesitation and the engine powers the car easily down the road. Power-assisted steering has a nice feel but still allows for the “one-finger” approach to turning - when appropriate. The power-assisted brakes are operating normally. We have recently replaced brake master cylinder and power booster to improve the brake performance and authenticity. You can feel that this car was engineered for luxury and comfort whether driving in-town or on the interstate.
As you can see in the photos, details under the hood and on the underside of the car were not forgotten. They look amazing! The car drive and rides much like it must have in 1964 as aged shocks and suspension components were replaced – front and rear -during the restoration. This Park Lane currently rides on bias-ply white wall tires just like they did in 1964.
As mentioned previously, this car underwent an extensive and passionate restoration over a period of about 8 years ago.Three binders full of receipts, invoices and research show little expense was spared with the project!All the meticulous documentation and restoration photographs will accompany the car along with the original factory build sheet, owner’s and service manuals and a variety of additional literature — many of these items can be seen in the photos below.
Why are we selling such a great car? We love this car and have enjoyed driving it and sharing it but space and time constraints force us to let it go. It's time for its next caretaker - and there is still time for Summer cruising!
Finer Details
This car is more than 50 years old so there are a few things that aren’t perfect. I don’t want there to be any disappointments with the car so please read over this carefully. Ask any questions before bidding and the end of the auction.
- The AM radio works but at times, has a problem holding the selected station.
- The air conditioning switch on the dashboard always engages the blower fan but sometimes doesn’t engage the AC clutch. We are having our mechanic look at it. In the meantime a jump-wire from the clutch directly to the battery makes things cool again.
- As you can see from the detailed photos below, there is some pitting on door handles and C-pillar trim. I don’t think it detracts from the overall impact this car has.
- The trim cover on the power seat control is not installed. Needs some finesse.
- There are a few very minor nicks and scratches in the paint from light use – remember the paint was done 8 years ago.
- Three of the vinyl-covered button caps on the front seat have gone missing.
This is a rare opportunity to possess a bit of that time when luxury automobiles were truly special and made a statement about their owners. Summer cruise-in season still has a ways to go and this 1964 Mercury Park Lane is a beautiful example that you can enjoy with pride and share with others.

The winner of the auction is purchasing it as-is - no warranty is offered. The buyer is responsible for local pick-up and/or transport of the vehicle. I reserve the right to end the auction early as the car is for sale locally. Payment should be a bank-issued cashier's check or wire transfer. A $500 deposit is due within 24 hours after the auction. The black California plates were put of the car for photography and are not registered to the vehicle. They are not included in the auction. The car is currently registered in California and title is clear.
