MG TF 1250, 1954
The last (and in many ways the best) of the 'T' Series MGs
A lovely car, ready for use, really needs nothing for low key show use, general driving, and thorough enjoyment.
History: I bought it, some time ago, from an older fellow in NY who told me he was the second owner and had owned the car for a long, long time. He put it in safe, dry storage in 1994 and removed it over twenty years later. My only source of confirmation is the old NY license plate, the 1995 NY State inspection sticker, and his representation that the car has only covered 23,000 miles since new.
Work done over the past year: fuel tank, lines, pump, and carbs cleaned, rebuilt all brakes, new wire wheels, new tubes, new tires, most of the chrome replaced, new top, side curtains and tonneau, all fluids changed, dash restored, wiper motor cleaned of old impacted grease. I was told the car was repainted in the early 1990s and there isn't a single bubble or crack anywhere.
I went over the car with a magnet looking for any plastic filler...and there was none. In that sense, this must have one of the finest bodies of ANY TF anywhere. And the paint is quite nice, even nicely painted under the fenders, in the engine bay, etc.
Interior is also quite nice...no wear, no rips, no damage.
Compression is 135-140 psi in every cylinder, no smoke under normal running conditions, 50+ psi oil pressure when warm, these figures would seem to indicate that the 23k miles are accurate.
Also, clutch doesn't chatter, transmission works well, is quiet, doesn't pop out of gear, has good synchromesh action. A further confirmation.
Remarkably, all of the original gauges work, same with wipers, lights, horn, turn signals, dash lights, etc. I installed new seat belts, checked (as best as I could without a complete disassembly) the wood framing, chassis, all seemed fine. And steering, front end, shocks, exhaust, rubber seals and trim are all in very good condition.
On the road, of course, this TF is a dream to drive with light, precise steering, the joys of a folding windshield, excellent ride and handling, and while the 1250cc engine is not going to allow spinning the rear wheels in 4th gear, it cruises nicely at 65-70 mph and has lively acceleration at low speeds.
What is best is the beautiful style and lines of the body, one of the best looking MGs of all time. Truly a timeless shape. And one of only 9,600 TFs built.
It doesn't seem to leak oil (amazing), the differential is quiet, and while not a Pebble Beach quality concours example, it is (in my opinion) certainly suitable for local shows, and I would hope that any future owner agrees with my view that the indicated mileage could be original. Truth is, whatever it is, this is one incredibly solid 63 year old MG TF and should provide many years of enjoyment for its next owner.
With the recent acquisition of a Morgan, this TF has become superfluous to my needs and first reasonable offer....and it is sold.
