Every true Olds guy knows thatthe 1969 Hurst Olds Convertibleis one of the most highly sought after Oldsmobile's of all time. In fact we've heard of it as "The Holy Grail" of all muscle car collectors. A buddy and I found this all original convertible sporting a super clean original body in code 50 Cameo white this past fall as confirmed by the data plate. Over the winter we thought why not turn this rare gem intoa classic 1969 Hurst Olds Convertible. Only 920 Hurst Olds hardtops were made in 1969, and from what we've heard over the years there were only 3 or 4 convertible's ever made in 1969.We will explain everythingmy buddy and Ihave heard over the past40 years.We saw one sellingin California for $900,000, and supposedly there is a second one was somewhere in Iowa. According to the legendwe heard the third one was totaled back in the 1970's. My partner on this car actually saw one out in Waukegan Illinois back in the 1980's. It was owned by a little old lady that loved 442's. Whenhe first saw the car it was in beautiful number 2 condition, andthe ownerrarely drove it. She did allowhim to start it up, andhe saidit sounded wicked to say the least. He said her daily driver was a 1971 or a 1972 442 hardtop.He was inhis 20's back then and tried to buy the car from her several times over the years with no success,soheeventuallygave up.He last saw it in the mid 1990's heading northbound on highway 41 in North Chicago, Illinois. He said it was a sight to behold!He tried to run her down, but could never catch up to it. That memory faded until a copy of the Gearhead paper showed up at our mutual buddy's mechanic shop in the Feb/Mar issue of Gearhead in 2009.He still held on to that issue and it is pictured at the very end of the pictures in this auction. The cover story was all about that 1969 Hurst Olds Convertible being sold to a gentleman for a mere $100 including the entire story of how it was found. Most likely that entire article can be found online. We're assuming that the old lady passed and according to the story an uncle and nephew had no idea what was sitting in their back yard. The article we readstated the appraiserverified thatthere could have been anywhere fromfour to eight Hurst Olds Convertible's made from his experience and they were all just code 50 Cameo White Cutlass S convertible's that were plucked off the assembly line and made into the awesome Hurst Olds like we have transformed in this auction. That article verifies that thegem found in Waukegan, Illinois as one of two ever made, so the total production number still remains a mystery. The large Hurst decalsshown on the car have a magnet on the back side of the decals, so they will stay nicely on the carbut can easily be removed. The new ownerwill have a lot of fun with this drop top where ever they drive. We are leaving all the trophy winning at the local car shows up to the lucky winning bidder. We hope they have a nice mantle over their fireplace to clear a spot for all of the impending upcoming trophies. When we made the purchase this was a rust free body with an older paint job, but it did appear very clean. The prior owner said they just used the car on the weekends and it was always garage kept.He stated that this car was never involved in any accidents and all the body panels and chrome are original to the car. Neither one of us saw any evidence of this car ever being involved in any accidents.The doors still open like when this car was brand new in 1969. All the head lights, bright lights, turn signals, tail lights, brake lights, front cornering lights, rear quarter panel lights, license plate light, and even all five interior lights all work like they should. The interior really looks cool at night when the door is opened with the top down. We purchased the boxed hood scoop, whale tail spoiler, and 1969 Hurst Olds chromed styled sport mirrors all brand new. We installed brand new 442 grille's. We thenhad the body professionally painted by a gentleman who has been doing paintwork for over 25 years. The Hurst Olds striping was then applied. Virtually no body work was needed on this car.All of the original panels werethat clean!This body deserved all new Hurst Olds H/O emblems, so that is what it received. This car was loaded with options for back in the day which include power steering, power brakes, power convertible top, cruise control, and the deluxe lighting package. Even the light under the hood still works as it should when the headlights are on. Apparently all of the 1969 Hurst Olds convertible's were ordered with factory cruise control. The switch lights up on the dash and the mechanism is under the hood, but the vacuum canister is missing. Any missing cruise control parts can easily be obtained at a variety of aftermarket muscle car parts suppliers, so the new owner can potentially have the cruise control working again rather easily. We just never looking into that one item. The convertible top has some minor imperfections, but should be able to be used for a couple seasons. Althoughwe're sure the new owner will want to replace the top, so it will match the condition of the rest of the body. The top doesoperate up and down verynicely through thepower top switch on the dash.The dash pad is in pristine condition andwas never cut up to make an aftermarket stereo fit like was typically done back in the day. It still maintains its original AM radio that works great. The front and the rear floor pans are the originals and look in great condition. The carpeting is still in very good condition and we added a new set of fourblack carpetedfloor mats. The mileage has barely rolled over once, but to prepare the car for sale we replaced the timing chain, both gears, and gaskets. We changed the oil and oil filter, and all the antifreeze. We mounted a new coil on the firewall. We changed all the spark plugs with fresh AC Delco plugs and all new spark plug wires along with a new distributor cap, rotor, and points. To top it all off we even installed a brand new four barrel carburetor. At that time we replaced all the hoses on and around the carburetor and air cleaner. The nicely restored air cleaner has a new air cleaner as well. The engine has an Oldsmobile Performer aluminum intake manifold, but was painted in high temp engine paint when the engine was meticulously detailed. We also installed a brand new AC Delco battery with new terminal ends for maximum spark and starting power. There is a new fuel pump, so the gas pedal just gets pumped once and this Rocket starts right up and runs and drives great. The prior owner installed a new gas tank, so the gas gauge reads accurately. The dual exhaust with factory styled mufflers is newer so it has a sweet rumble out of the genuine GM trumpet exhaust tips. Steering these 1968-1972 GM A-body cars are simply a delight. We even installed the very expensive Hurst Olds Steering wheel. I'm sure all Hurst Olds guys know thata genuineH/O steering wheel can sell for as much as $1000 dollars. This car steers as good as it looks! This Olds should be prepared for may years of top down cruising at the local car shows and drive in movie theaters. All six sets of the original seat belts are in place for a family of six or just to have your sweetheart scooch next to you like the good old days. Maybe some Olds lover would just like the car to show up at their high school reunion to prove how cool they still are. The rear-end is a 12 bolt, but we arenot sure what the gear ratio is. This1969 Hurst Oldsconvertible look-a-likesits on a set of fourP215/70R14" inchFirestone Firehawkraised white lettered steel belted radial tiresmounted on a set of four 14" inch Super Stock II chrome style Hurst Olds wheelsvery similar tothe original Hurst Olds styled wheels in 1969. The original 1969 Hurst Olds wheels did not require trim rings, because that portion of the wheels is all chrome. The front two Firehawks are brand spanking new with the nubbies still on the treads, and the rear tires have less than 500 miles on them. All four chrome SS II wheels have all new chrome lug nuts, and allfourcenter caps. The original trunk flooris one of the nicest original floors you will find on one of these cars.The trunk mat may be the original that is still in good condition. The trunk carriesan original jack, jack stand,bumper mount, and crow bar along with the original California boot cover for when the top is down in the well.Also included in the trunk is afull sizematching Firehawk spare tire onthe matching chromeSS II wheel.
