This was my parts car (never actually pulled a single part) It's a survivor, undisturbed for almost 50yrs. It has been sitting under tarps in my back yard for the last 5yrs.
The Bad :( Frame & Body are swiss cheese, rusted beyond repair, car is actually sagging in the middle due to loss of integrity... (Still interested?) OK, transmission slips badly (still will drive around the property) currently running it off a red plastic 1 gallon can under the hood. Engine was replaced at some point or the heads were at least (#8 heads as I recall) starts right up, runs and idles fine... I've never run it longer than a few minutes... I've never actually driven it on the road, just moved it from here to there, loaded it on a trailer, unloaded it... The car has all the other issues associated with being 50yrs. old... springs, bushings, shocks, brakes, rubber parts, upholstery, metal parts are almost all in poor shape or in dire need of restoration. Still Interested? on we go...
The Good!!! :) Ok here's 1 of the main selling points I think, and 1 of the main reasons why I bought the car 5 yrs. ago. When I bought this car, I had also recently purchase another '68 Cutlass convertible that was 1/2 way restored (meaning it was almost completely in pieces, parts in boxes) So, rather than look in a book to figure out how it went back together, i could just go look at this car to see... So having a car that is complete can be helpful when restoring another car... or let's say you have a good body and frame already, a roller... this would be another way to use this car, swap everything over and poof, cool car... So other than that here are the parts actually worth something.. the convertible top is pretty solid actually (see pics) the pump and switch operate as they should and are very responsive. The quarter panel stainless moldings are pretty dang good too, these are hard to find and Ive seen these go for as much as $750 for a decent pair... the wheel opening moldings, door and fender moldings are all pretty decent as well (driver quality for sure, and maybe better if polished) missing 1 fender molding, and the other I think is a '69 fender molding (1 piece as opposed to 2) Another, selling point is the A/C dash, not cracked, not a bad dash... The hood surprisingly is OK, a little rust on near 1 hinge (hinges themselves are great) hood looks pretty straight, the center of the hood got hot and peeled the paint just above the carburetor... 14" original rally wheels are good... Quite a few interior parts can be salvaged I'm sure... radio doesn't work but is original and could be repaired... the seat belts are all serviceable... Oh, BIG ONE... the front windshield is almost perfect, no cracks or dings, and ALL the surrounding stainless cladding is excellent as well, this is a tricky area to get right when restoring a convertible...
So here's my thinking... I'm not interested in parting this thing out, 1st of all, it would be a shame, and I could probably make more money if I did... And, with just a few parts, convertible top & motor, moldings, dash, engine, drive train, wheels interior parts, windshield etc... I could easily reach $3000... But again, I really feel that the car as a whole has value beyond the parts total and would make someone's life so much easier having a complete parts car... So, that's the story... Clear Texas title in my name... Bottom line is, I would put this car back on the road as it is and just have fun with it, but the truth is, the frame and body are soooo far gone, it's simply not safe or even possible, salt salt salt and time have taken there toll on this Old(s) Cutlass... It needs a good home to retire to, where it can be a great donor to another brother worth saving... Take Care!!! Thanks for Looking!!! Please spread the word if you know anyone lookin'!!! eight three oh three oh five five oh five oh if you'd like to talk it over... Dave...
