I grew up the son of an Oldsmobile man and turned into one myself. My father was an Oldsmobile zone manager around the country throughout the late 1950's through the early 1970's until he went into partnership with an Oldsmobile Dealer and then eventually owned and operated his own dealership until the early 1980's. This was a very exciting time for Oldsmobile. I remember in 1979 more than 1 million Oldsmobile's were sold. My dad always had a Oldsmobile Cutlass or 442 convertible. They were typically flame orange (color code 65) or matador red (color code 75).
In 1995 I bought this 1972 cutlass convertible (matador red) from a person who had recently re-located to the Kansas City area from Texas. What attracted me to the car was how original the car is. There has never been any Bondo put in the car to repair rust. There was some small repair done on the driver's door years ago. This is a very original car. Even the trim on the side of the car is original from 1972.
Here is what is great bout the car:
·The body is fantastic for a car this original. There is some very small rust spots behind the passenger side wheel well and behind the driver's side wheel well and there is a larger spot above the driver's side wheel well. This spot is identical to how it looked 21 years ago
·The under carriage and the floor pan is original and excellent
·The doors are amazing, do not hang and are not rusted, even in the door jamb area is very clean and free from rust
·The trunk is very good and houses the original spare wheel with the original tire
·The engine and transmission run excellent. The engine does not leak oil in the garage. No overheating, no noises when you give it full gas. 350 4 barrel original numbers matching
·The car drives very good
·The dash board is superb and the original AM Radio works
·Have protect-o-plate and original manuals
What is not so great:
·The paint on the hood and trunk are oxidized
·There is a small amount of rust on the car around the rear wheel wells. Can be seen in close-up pictures. There is also some on the bottom of the trunk lid
·The rear bumper has some dents
·The front seat needs re-covered
·The rear window is about half way unattached from the convertible top. The top is in good shape but needs the rear window part replaced
·There is a leak in the power steering somewhere
More details about the car:
·The air conditioner is not attached. I have the compressor.
·I do have a set of bucket seats and a very nice console for a 1972 cutlass that I will include with the car if the bid hits $13k
·I have an original clock that goes with the car
·I have an original rear wheel molding for the passengers wheel well. There is dent in the one on the car
·The floor mats are original but purchased in the last few years
My original plan was to re-paint the car flame orange and badge it as a 442. You likely know the 1972 442 story and the strike at GM that gave us one more good year of the Cutlass and 442. Unfortunately health issues and things in life have changed that plan. If you are looking for a very original car that you can drive and enjoy right now while doing small jobs to make the car better this may be the car for you.
Please let me know what questions you may have.

When I bought the car in 1995 the odometer showed just under 40,000. It now shows 45,700. To look at the car it is hard to imagine it is 145k miles but I also cannot believe it is 45k original. Much closer to 45k vs 145k.
