1980 HMV Freeway Microcar
Description
For sale is my 1981 HMV (High Mileage Vehicle) Freeway. Made in Minnesota between 1979-1982, this 3-wheeled microcar was a response to the oil crisis and was said to get 80-100 mpg. Operations ceased in 1982 with approximately 700 of these made.
This particular model has had the bottom steering joint relocated on both front wheels to improve the handling of the car. It has also had a suspension modification. Due to this modification, two cylindrical body panels have been added outside the car to cover where the modification was made (color matched). The fiberglass body/paint has some cracks where these panels were attached (see pictures).
This car is powered by a CVT belt drive transmission. There's no shifting - you press the go-cart-esquegas pedal/metal bar and start moving. Because of this, there's no reverse. The car is extremely light however and easy to push around. You can even put one foot out the door and push yourself backward slowly.
The brakes work well (for their design). It's best to ease into braking gently as the back brake is overpowered compared to the fronts.
Overall the car is in good shape. The outside looks nice, with a few blemishes here and there. Gas cap shows some wear. The interior is a little rougher, but is pretty basic. Seat has a tear or two. The top sunroof comes off. The windows can be removed with some modification, but do have small vents for airflow. The body is fiberglass. Turn signals and light works great.
The car handles well up to about 35-40 mph. Around 40 the carstartsto shake until the speed gets back down to 35 mph.
Titled as a motorcycle in Michigan.
*Listed as a 1980, but actually a 1981. Ebayrequires a VIN for cars 1981 and newer and didn't recognize theVIN entered. Again, car is titled and registered.
