Description

Here is a 1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible
This is a PHS documumented, 400, 4 speed car.
This car is very complete and very restorable but will need restoration. It has been in clean dry storage since the late 80's. Therefore the trunk, floors and frame are all very solid. It sports its original interior and correct but not #'s matching engine. This car appears to have all of its original welded on body panels, but the front bumper and hood were changed at some point (they were different colors)
Factory Options that were listed out on the PHS were as follows:
Disk BrakesHid-a-way headlights4 speed transmission
Overall this car is an excellent restoration candidate. It has its original burgundy paint, so there should be no hidden surprises or filler. The car shows no signs of any significant body damage or repair from crash. All panels appear to be original and straight, however as typical of a vehicle that is nearly 50 years old, there is some rust.
The car is not numbers matching. It does have a CORRECT 1968 WT coded engine with #16 heads and a 1968 intake. I have not looked at the distributor, alternator or starter. The carb is not the original. The Odometer shows 70899 miles, and I assume that would be original miles.
The engine starts and runs, sounds fine. It has been wired to start and run, but still needs to correctly wired and plumbed.
Exterior:The front bumper is a correct 68 with the emblem and has the hid-a-way system. No major chucks missing, or heavy cracking. The hood is fairly clean, on the top side and from what I can remember is pretty clean underneath as well. Not perfect, but usableBoth inner fenders appear to be goodThe front bumper, valance, hood and fenders are not aligned very well. Both fenders are straight but do have some rust in the lower heels areas. Could be repaired with the lower repair panels that are readily available and made in the USA.Both doors are in excellent condition. Corners are solid. Pass appears to have some filler up high. (not from rust)Both outer rockers look real good. Both quarters are rather solid but do have some rust issues mainly down low behind the rear tire.Could be repaired with the lower repair panels that are readily available and made in the USA. The driver quarter did have a bump in it as seen in the photos. Looks like no structure damage at all. Trunk lid has no rust on the inner lip. These are getting very tough to find. Floor pans appear to be in pretty good condition mainly showing some surface rust that may become pin holes? Trunk floor has a couple of pin holes, and a couple of holes for air shocks, but other wise solid.Dash and lower windshield area both look very good. Looks like a hole was drilled on the Dr side of the lower dash. See photos. Fire wall and cowl both look good. All of the exterior stainless is there and very restorable, except for the wheel opening moldings.
Interior:Interior is also very complete and original. It should be very easy to restore.Bucket seat frames are very solid and the correct original sides and backs are in good condition.Rear seat frame is also in good condition. These rear seats being convertible only are very difficult to find. The dash has not been cut. Gauges appear to be correct and original and show just over 70,000 miles.Car appears to have its original steering wheel.Windows all roll up and down as they should.Car has a new carpet set installed.
Drivetrain:This car has a correct WT engine. All of the date codes are matching on the block heads and intake. The carburetor is not original.Transmission is also date-matched to the car. Transmission shows no signs of abuse. Shifter is Hurst competition plus with a round stick. Housing has the correct part number and date code however I was unable to find the 2 letter stamp on the axle. Often times sandblasting is needed to reveal the stamping.Suspension appears to all be original with disk brakes on the front. The frame is solid and doesn't appear to be overly pitted.
