Description

In Autumn 1988, a year after the Frankfurt launch, the new Speedster was shown to Porsche importers. The cars had the Turbo look with flared arches and the Clubsport option had been quietly dropped. Some European dealers had already placed orders for narrow bodied cars and so, starting in 1989, Carrera Speedsters began to be supplied in both narrow body and Turbo-look styles
Some cars are considered collectibles from the word go. Porsche has sold many such collectible sports cars in its 60-plus years of business, and this speedster is definitely one of them. The 911 Speedster was a limited production vehicle, of which only 2,056 were built in 1989, of the 2,056 built 1,894 featured the "M491 Turbo Look" wide body, suspension and brake upgrade option, and 823 Speedsters were sold in America. It not only celebrated the end of the first generation of air-cooled 911 production, which dated back to 1963, but evoked the legendary 1954-'57 356 Speedster in name and image--a sure-fire hit with Porsche enthusiasts and automobile collectors alike
The collector-car world was reaching new highs in terms of values and selling prices in the late 1980s, and Porsche executives saw an opportunity to capitalize on this, while satisfying their core constituency. Although the original plan for the Speedster was that it would be a fair-weather, low content, less expensive car primarily intended for the American market, the price point shifted; that the reality was both more expensive ($65,480 versus $59,200) and less luxurious than the Carrera Cabriolet it was based on didn't matter to buyers who lined up to pay well over list price for the opportunity to own one. Despite being an "image" car that was highly recognizable as a special edition, the 911 Speedster brought the goods
Considered option "M503" and based on the 214hp 3.2 Carrera Cabriolet, it debuted at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show. The production 1989 Speedster wore a unique aluminum framed windshield that was more than 3 inches lower and raked 5 degrees flatter than that of the standard Cabriolet. One-piece wind-up side windows, lacking the Cabriolet's fixed quarter panes, curved salaciously in concert with the low-slung "temporary" convertible top, a complicated-to-erect fabric cover that lacked the insulation, lining and optional power actuation of that on its Cabriolet sibling. It may have been tough to fit and not totally weatherproof--Porsche actually required buyers to sign a disclaimer accepting some wind noise and water leaks in poor weather--but when raised, the roof echoed that of the 356 Speedster, and made the 911 look deadly sinister. Special Speedster equipment also included the evocative twin-hump fiberglass tonneau that covered the folded top and precluded rear seats, and lowered bucket seats with supportive sport seatbacks
Of the 2,056 Speedsters built, 1,894 featured the "M491 Turbo Look" wide body, suspension and brake upgrade option, and 823 Speedsters were sold in America. Because most were treated as collectibles, the bulk have been driven very little to this day--a shame, because the 3.2-liter Carrera-based Speedster is considered among the best-sorted, best built, most durable air-cooled 911s ever made
