The Porsche Speedster is a true legend among automobiles. Built with the less is more mentality, it was actually a case of removing equipment to reduce the cost of the car and compete with less expensive cars. Ironically, the cars are more collectible now and worth considerably more than their plusher counterparts. The car was built in direct response to requests for American Porsche distributor Max Hoffman for a car that would sell better in the United States and would be inexpensive enough to compete with Triumphs and MG`s. The resulting car had only what was necessary: side curtains, a cut down windscreen, bucket seats, and a rudimentary top.
Just finished restoration and awaiting a home, Aase Sales performed a top-down, inside-out restoration. We purchased the car from the second owner who moved from southern California in the 1980s. He took the car apart to do a restoration and never finished the car, fortunately he had all the original parts like the ignition switch, starter button, hood handle and gauges. Retiring to Florida, he sold his house in Ohio in one day and had 30 days to move out. Consequently he came to us to purchase the car and all of the accompanying parts in May of 2014. We began the restoration then and have just completed the Speedster. Every speck of detail meticulously noted and restored as needed.
The speedster was completely media blasted on a rotisserie and epoxy primered. The body was in excellent condition, the chassis number is on the panels as shown. At some point during its life the floor pans were replaced but the sheet metal all appears to be original. We had the car painted by the top guy in Ohio at a cost of about $50,000 The body, fit and shine are amazing. The car was block sanded by hand between every step and it shows. The hood, engine lid and door gaps are perfect. Being a parts company we also put every part new on the car we could, no expense was spared. Speedsters have been, and are currently, highly collectible. They are iconic in the car world. Recently Speedsters at auction have sold for over $500,000 and even as high as in the $600,000 range. These cars are better investments than the stock market! The value and desire of obtaining one of these 356 models is only increasing.
