1968 Volkswagen Double Cab Pickup Truck
Description
Well, I have finished restoring my 1968 Double Cab. My project is done; so, it's time to sell and move on to the next.
I drive it a couple days a week in good weather. I have a binder full of receipts that indicate the amount of work and parts that I've put into it. The previous owner did some very nice exterior detail, such as full-flare openings on all four wheels and late-model front end.
The truck has had previous rust repair, and everything is solid. One of the jack mounts has rust. The others are solid and clean (see pics).
The entire wiring system is new; all of it. I found a guy in England that made the harness for RHD. He told me that if would remove and mark all the connectors, he would create a LHD version. So, there is not a single inch of old, cracked insulation, or broken connectors anywhere. What a treat to work on it.
I've added a tach, voltmeter, oil pressure, and oil temp gauge. Overkill, maybe; but I like them.
All the rubber and seals are new; all of it. That's all the windows and door seals, etc.
I added a ragtop that fits perfectly. The PO had installed a crappy moonroof. Too bad he cut the hole too big for the moonroof. So, I found a company that makes raptops for all kinds of vehicles. and they made custom one for me to cover from the front of the structural 'beam' just behind the drivers seat. Oddly, it creates no noise.
The engine was built by Steve Sands of ProFlow Performance. You couldn't find a better VW engine buiilder.
The engine is a 1915cc beauty. It has dual weber Idf 40s, svda distributer, additional sump with 2-quart additional oil capacity, aluminum pulley, valve covers, etc.
If you're a details guy, here it is:
-- DISPLACEMENT: 1915 Longblock-- OIL SYSTEM: 26mm oil pump-- BORE: 94mm-- PISTON/CYLINDER: Mahle 94x69-- STROKE: 69mm -- CRANKSHAFT: std/std-- COMPRESSION RATIO: 7.5:1-- DECK HEIGHT: .089-- ROD LENGTH: 5.394-- ROD TYPE: Reconditioned I-Beam-- CAMSHAFT: Scat C-25-- CAM GEAR: Bolt-on-- VALVE LIFT: .396-- CAM DURATION: 385-- VALVE LASH INT.: .004-- VALVE LASH EXH.: .004-- CYLINDER HEADS: FPD “042”-- VALVE SIZE: INT. 40 EXH. 35.5-- ROCKER ARMS: Stock 1.1-- ROCKER SHAFTS: Heavy duty-- IGNITION SYSTEM: SVDA-- CARBURATION: Dual Weber IDF 40-- FLYWHEEL: Resurfaced stock
The truck has wheel spacers on all four corners. Its stance is cool. I have air shocks on the back, which is nice to keep the stance even and to carry heavior loads.
The Jenson stereo has a pop-up screen for all audio controls, movies, USB, Blue tooth, rear camera display, and all that. It fits nicely in the one DIN opening, so very little trimming was needed to install.
I installed a backup camera and a switch on the dash, so I can turn on the camera any time I need it. The six inch screen works great with the camera.
I put in brighter dash lights, so they are much better than before.
Per a suggestion from thesamba.com, I installed much brighter headlights. They really are a worth-while upgrade.
The steering only has about an inch of free play. The steering is straight and true. the steering box had been previously replaced.
I added an electric pump on the windshield washers. They pump water to the windshield very well. And it is installed so everything looks original. The switch is located on the wiper switch. Here's the list of upgrades and fixes:
-- EMPI shifter
-- underdash 'junk' tray
-- Gas tank cleaned and inspected
-- New sending unit
-- New Canvas 'ragtop'
-- All new seat covers and padding
-- New floor mat
-- New headliner
-- New side door panels, front and rear
-- New windshield and rear side windows
-- Rebuilt brake system
-- Rebuilt heating system, front to rear. It works.
-- New front seat belts
-- New 12-inch, 100w subwoofer (located under the rear seat)
-- New tires (under 1500 miles)
-- New air shocks
-- Backup camera
-- New exterior front door handles
-- New MAACO paint. (I think they did a pretty good job.)
I bought this truck as a challenge to rebuild it. It took three years, and you are seeing the result. Everybody thinks I'm crazy for selling it. I tell them that I wasn't looking for a double cab, I bought it for the challenge. I want a Karmann Ghia for my next project, but that's another story for another day.
If you would like more area-specific pics, email me and I will add them to this listing. I'm sure I missed some things, but you get the point.
I will assist with pickup or transportation. Buyer pays all transportingcosts.
