1978 VW Diesel Rabbit built in West Germany. I bought this from the original ownertwo years ago.This rabbit is in exceptional original shape and the ultra low mileage on the chassis is documented throughout its service history. Zero auto accidents, a few dings and some minor rust in areas behind mud flaps(see photos) etc. No salt is used on our roads in Washington State.Paint is original and beautiful, body is untouched and has never been restored.Strut towers & pans are clean and solid.This Rabbit runs and drives flawlessly.It has the ideal mixture of fuel economy(53mpg Hwy/ 41city, quickness, with a smooth ride on the highway!It is driven daily.
This summer it got some major upgrades in the form of a 1600 long block (longer stroke) mated to the hard to find 5spd diesel specific 4S transmission. Tons of low end torque and pulls hard in every gearNo smoke, no oil leaks, etc. Full rebuild on the shiftter/linkage. New Bosch injectors, Giles Performance Diesel Injection pump (worth the $850 for 20%+ HP gain), mandrel bent racing exhaust (2 1/4 straight pipew/ resonator)that sounds great and is quiet at Hwy speeds. Newinjector lines, fast glow plugs / relay/fuse block, valve cover gaskets, and an early NOS 80's K&N air filter. All sensors, relays, belts etc.have been replaced as well as a new radiator installed with all new hoses. New Toyo tires (siped)on original repainted wheels. No vacuum booster to deal with on this year/model! All lights work, heater/fan switch on all three speeds, etc. All work done professionally (with receipts) by the best old school Vdub mechanicin thePNW.
Interior is original with the exception of the reupholstered seats (over stuffed) and the mechless Pioneer Bluetooth stereo system with 800 watt blaupunkt sub woofer / 4 speaker system (Not included in the sale unless arrangements are made).
The word rare is over used but this rabbit definitely stands alone in terms of its originality, low mileage and overall mechanical condition.
