Description

You are looking at a rare Series 1 Datsun 240z manufactured in October 1970 (Titled as a 1971 in Virginia) that has been recently restored to almost new condition! Most of these earliest cars have long rusted away while this one was preserved in the dry California climate before restoration. Thousands of dollars and many, many, many hours were spent on the maintenance and restoration of this car. This is the NICEST 240z I have seen in a long time.

In 1970 the first boat load of 240Z's left the Datsun Factory in Hiratsuka, Japan bound for import to the United States. Nobody could have expected that this little Japanese two seater would radically change the idea of an affordable sports car forever. The designer, Yoshihiko Matsuo took design inspiration from the Ferrari GTO and Jaguar E-Type to create the cars gorgeous flowing body lines that would remain unchanged for almost 10 years.

This one has all the Series 1 features including vertical defroster grid, vents in the hatch rather than the B-Pillar, non-retractable seat belts, partially reclining seats, one-sided keys, speedometer that starts at 20 m.p.h., 2400 CC valve cover.

Lets start with a look all the way around this beauty.

Straight lines down the sides!

Now we'll peek under the hood at the numbers matching L24 motor with the high compression E31 head that is often taken for race cars.

Wow that's clean and shiny!

That's a 280z electronic ignition distributor

A little leaking from the MC but that's been taken care of. Paint is bubbled though. :(

Hitachi Carbs rebuilt by Z-Therapy! Nobody does them better.

Let's check the numbers while we are in there.....

Original Data Plate Matches

So far so good!

And YES the high compression head is here too! All checks out!

Let's open the doors and look inside.....

Nice looking wood steering wheel, indents-no holes.

Correct wood shift knob goes to 4. Nice CD player with AUX input for IPhone.

Wait, is that an uber-rare manual throttle!?!

Speedo starts at 20 mph. And goes to 160. Optimistic? Maybe but it does run out to 125 or so says the catalog. I never tried it.

Even the clock works!

One spot on the dash not perfect.

Messy glove box but it does have an owners manual.

Lets check out the fuse panel. It's behind here.

Nice upgrade! The originals are known for problems.

Seats look nice

Details matter

How are the floors.

Drivers side:

And Passenger side:

Honda blower is also a nice upgrade! More volume and quiet!

And now the back:

What's under the carpets:

Oh yes, on the earliest cars there were these holes. Some say for lightening the chassis.

Clean and rust free!

Does it include the tools/jack stuff?

No rust on the hatch opening.

Wheels are Dealer installed Appliance 14x6 Slotted Mags. So cool on 240z's. Still have their SEMA stickers on the inside.

Let's finish with an underside inspection:

Pax side control arm connection

Drivers side control arm connection

And other underside

And a few details:

Corners:

Still see the spot welds. Super clean.

It can't be all good. Unfortunately the paint has some defects like these cracks showing through. It's hard to photograph these. An inspection is highly recommended.

All lights (including map light, glove box light, dome light) work. Cigarette lighter works. Electrical system upgraded with new spade style fuse box, and front and rear relay harnesses to boost headlight and taillight function.

Gas tank has been professionally boiled out and coated to better than new specs. All fuel vent hoses are new.

The suspension has new urethane bushings and new ball joints, new wheel cylinders, rebuilt calipers. New front struts.

Electrical system upgraded with electronic distributor, high output coil, new fuse box to accept modern spade fuses, new harnesses.
