For sale: 1975 F100 4x4 running and driving western survivor project truck. Built in San Jose, CA and ordered new by a rancher in Montana’s Bitteroot valley. Loaded with rare options including the Explorer “A” package, 16” 5 lug wheels, and the 2 speed Hi-Lo NP205 transfer case. With the striking Mexicali Red exterior and Coral interior, I’m certain it was the talk of the local café when he pulled up for coffee. It started out as his "Sunday truck" and was pampered for a time, but eventually got put in the rotation for ranch use. After a life out on the range, the truck was parked for many years until it caught a young man’s fancy and was trailered to nearby Missoula. The young man planned to restore it, but as is often the case, his funds and skill level were not up to the task. It ended up sitting down the road from my brother’s house, forlorn and neglected. After driving by for several years, last summer I decided to rescue it from the young man’s yard and get it back on the road. I’m a retired engineer, and old trucks are sort of a passion for me. After the usual fuel system, cylinder head and brake work needed to get it running and driving, I’ve used it as a dump runner and parts chaser for the past year. The truck STILL NEEDS WORK, it’s not fully sorted. It’s a rare truck with only 545 built in Calypso Coral (Mexicali Red). It’s fairly straight and not horribly rusty, well worth taking to the next level. Complete and pretty correct, still has original jack, handle, and lug wrench. Vintage topper is included, it's in very good condition. I’ll do my best to describe this special truck below, PLEASE see the Photobucket album link with pics including the underside in the description, and the YouTube walk around video.
Exterior: Decent 20 footer, looks clean enough to gather compliments at the gas station, but strictly driver quality, not car show material. One repaint many years ago, and the 2nd owner touched up many areas with a brush and spray can. Driver quality rig, if you want it nice, IT WILL NEED REPAINT. Some dents and dings, most notably to the front fenders. Glass is good including windshield. Truck has some minor rust, but nothing like the sitting-at-the-bottom of the lake rot you see back east. Exterior rust is limited to a few blisters at bottom of driver fender, and a hole at rear of box on passenger side. Truck has never seen salt, but here out west mud packs in those areas and holds moisture. Underside looks good except a couple spots on floors and a spot under battery tray. Cab mounts, dropoffs and supports look good. Snowy boots melting caused floor to rust in a few spots, jute backing under mat holds moisture. 2nd owner patched it, but would need floor pans replaced someday to be really right. Nothing is covered up or hidden with bedliner or undercoat, what you see is what you get. Driver door needs hinge pins and bushings, which I bought but never installed, they will be included. Inside of box is dinged up, a slide in bedliner would look great, they are inexpensive. Also a few pinholes at back of bed. Please see linked Photobucket album for detail pics. Just an honest survivor to tinker with and use as is or take to the next level.
Interior: Original and decent driver condition, no rodent damage or smells. Truck was used to move irrigation sprinklers, which involves a lot of getting in and out and the original seat suffered substantial wear on driver outer edge. Seat has been replaced with correct one from another truck, and original seat is included if you want it. There's a hole in the headliner under the hat holder, no holes were drilled for the holder. Most everything works, headlights, turn signals, brake lights, horn, wipers, heater blower. Radio and fuel gauge non-op. Windows roll up and down and doors lock. Needs heater core and floor mat is torn. Glass is good including windshield. Decent enough that the wife won’t mind riding in it.
Mechanical: Starts, runs and drives but will need some further sorting. The original engine was replaced with a remanufactured long block at about 100k. The young man that pulled it from the rancher’s field tried to start it on stale gas, and stuck an intake valve and bent a push rod. He pulled the heads off, and that’s as far as he got. I had a mechanic shop here in town disassemble the heads, inspect and reinstall them. Also had the carb rebuilt and other work done to get the truck running and driving – it wasn’t cheap. I also had new exhaust with glass pack mufflers installed. With new battery and old style manual choke, the truck starts in any weather no matter how cold. Drives like an old Ford F100 4wd, factory assist steering works fine and doesn't leak, but has some play as is typical to these systems. I don’t think much has been done to the front end since new other than it does have new track bar (radius arm) bushings. 10 ply LT235/85 16 radials have decent tread with no cracking but are older. Suprisingly, for an old 4wd it has no major leaks. Only drips I can see on driveway are off rear end pinion seal. I used it last winter and 4wd works in both high and low range. After driving it for a year, here’s what I think it needs: Power brake booster(leaks), heater core(leaks), shocks(worn), E-brake cable(park brake non-op), front end/steering work, fuel sending unit float(gas gauge not working).
I’m sure you’ll come across other things that will need to be sorted. If you haven’t fooled with vintage vehicles before, adjust your expectations accordingly.
Pricing/Misc: This truck is NO RESERVE and will sell, and it might go cheap. If you're looking for a minty cream puff, this isn't your ride. If you are looking for a cool old truck to putt around in and fix up, this could be the one. Truck runs and drives, but flying in and driving it home isn’t a viable option, it’s not fully sorted for a long trip and Montana is a huge state with many remote areas with no cell service or roadside assistance. Reasonable transport is available, I will drive truck to meet your transporter and help load it. Title is clear and in my name, buyer will need to get insurance upon purchase as I will cancel mine. Truck can stay here for 30 days, after that $100/month storage will be due.
