PORSCHE 356 SUPER 90 BLACK COUPE GOOD CONDITION- ORIGINAL ENGINE- T6 356B MODEL
Description
For Sale, my 1962 Porsche 356 with Original Super 90 Engine
This black beauty is a rare Porsche model that is just a pleasure to drive. It is a rust-free 1962 Porsche 356 Coupe with the Original Super 90 Engine, which runs great. It is a Reutter 356B couple with the T6 body style. I purchased this car in 2011 when I lived in California and it is the 6th Vintage Porsche I have owned. The previous owner had it from 1985 until my purchase and there were 2 prior owners, all in California. The odometer lists 16,803- I believe but cannot guarantee that the actual mileage is 116,803, but this would coincide with the service paperwork that I have from the prior owner. I used to drive this regularly, but now I work and live in New York City, and the car is garaged in Pennsylvania. The car is always garaged and professionally maintained. I own and run two businesses in NYC and I can't give the proper time to drive the car weekly, which is what 356s really need. So I'm passing the torch to the next steward.
The Porsche 356 is a great, classic Porsche. Lightweight, with a spirited engine, they are a pleasure to drive and are made for curvy roads. Approximately 78,000 of these cars were made and it's estimated that only 1/2 of them survive today. This model is the desirable T6 body style of the 356B and has the 90-horsepower 616/7 1600cc engine. Around 6,000 Super 90 engines were made, so fewer than 8% of 356s had this engine option.
As I've owned several of these old Porsches and appreciate other people's respect for these cars, I will be completely straightforward about the car and what I know about it. This Porsche is a fun driver. While it is a beautiful car and draws a lot of attention, it is not a Concours car- mechanically it is solid and performs very well, but it has some cosmetic imperfections. The paint is an older paint job of Black over the original color (Yellow) and the paint is cracking in places and has chipped off in a few spots, plus there are a handful of scratches that I will describe below and have in the additional photographs (see link for 70 pictures). Additionally, there are a few odds and ends that I haven't tackled yet cosmetically- there is a 2mm rock chip in the windshield, one of the fog lamps is cracked, the horn button is cracked, the original radio has power but the speakers aren't functional.
If you've owned a vintage car, you know that it is a journey of maintenance and upkeep and those two things bring you the great joy of driving these machines. You're really a steward of these cars, keeping them at their best to preserve them. When I acquired the car, it was not running well, so I have focused my energy on getting the car into great running condition, and it drives like a dream. The Super 90 engine was a rare model for the 356, and while 90 horsepower in today's world isn't much power, but because of the light weight of the 356, they're just a ton of fun to drive, especially off-highway on back roads. Here's what's been completed mechanically during my ownership to get the car to peak running condition-Recently tuned and serviced with valve adjustment- August 2018
Replaced engine push rods
Rebuilt generator and the voltage generator
Rebuilt carburetors
Installed new fuel sender
Installed new muffler
Replaced front engine shroud
Wheel Cylinders replaced on all wheels with alignment
Replaced outer tie rod end on left front
Clutch release bearing replaced
Rebuilt tachometer and replaced speedometer cable
Replaced transaxle gear oil
Replaced sway bar bushings
Heater cables & boots replaced
New battery
With these serviced, the car runs very very well. What would I tackle next? The transmission works smoothly and shifts easily. However, it does hum at higher speeds. This may be caused by the ring and pinion becoming worn with age. This has no impact on the running ability of the car, but may be a future thing to tackle.
The Black paint is shiny and looks good. It does draw attention and there's nothing quite like a black coupe. The original color is Champagne Yellow #6205 (747 is the Reutter code) and the prior owner said he had it painted because he really wanted a black car, which I can understand. It was completed in the 80s and not a bare metal paint job, so the yellow is still there under the paint and is visible in a few spots- in the half-dollar-sized paint chip below windshield on the passenger side, on the rear interior side of the back bumper, within the passenger side door gap, and on a small chip on the dash to the left of the fuel/temp indicator. The paint is cracking at the spot of the large chip I just mentioned and below the rear window on the driver's side, plus there are rock chips in the paint below the front hood, scratches on the roof and doors, and a couple of small chips on the driver fender and passenger quarter panel. I would say the paint now is a 6 out of 10. It looks sharp and shiny and you'll be proud to drive it. There is no evidence of any accidents and when I purchased it, we identified and removed any rust, which was here-
Battery Box floor and rear wall replaced
Right side jackport replaced
Right side rear longitudinal repaired
These repairs were done professionally in 2014 by a Porsche specialist in Philadelphia, and after these repairs, the floors, suspension pan, jack points and battery box are all solid. The chrome wheels are in great condition as is the chrome on the bumpers. The rubber window, hood, and trunk seals overall are in good condition, with some shrinking of the rubber on the decorative chrome/rubber trim on the bumpers. The tires are in good condition and are Pirellis. The optional Chrome Luggage rack that came with the car is included, it but has been removed.
The interior is in very good condition- the dash, headliner the seats are firm and clean and adjust properly, with a small tear on the binding of the left side of the driver's seat. One of the interior rubber window seals on the rear passenger side comes loose easily. The original Blaupunkt radio remains, powers up, but I haven't been able to work through the speakers. An unintended consequence of having the tachometer rebuilt is that the original speedometer looks duller- you can see this in the picture.
I have the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity for the car, which is included and states:1962 356B/1600 S-90 Reutter CoupleVIN #118444Production Date- 11/17/1961Engine #804400Exterior Paint Color- Champagne Yellow/6205Black Leatherette Interior
Many additional photographs and details available at www.csb356.wixsite.com/super90 - I recommend that you take a look there for more details and close up photographs of the scratches and paint that I mention here. I have presented all of the details about the car, but as it is a used, vintage car, there may be things that I am not aware of or have overlooked.
